Three Things Friday : Mimi’s Bakehouse
It’s been a pretty good week, all things considered.
Er, I’m actually kinda worried I’ve just jinxed myself by saying that, and that the universe will have pricked up its ears and thought, “What’s that? Amber having a good week? Well, let’s just see how we can ruin it, shall we?” I’m pretty sure I know how it’ll do it, too: I’m writing this on Thursday afternoon, with a sore throat and the beginning of a cold, so there’s a good chance that by the time you read it, I’ll be a snivelling wreck of a person, feebly calling out for Terry to bring me another Lemsip. Because that’s how I usually deal with colds, let’s face it. Still, even if this cold does get worse than it is now, at least I’ll have some positive things to look back on from the week, namely…
On Sunday afternoon we headed into Edinburgh to meet some friends at Mimi’s Bakehouse, in Leith. It was a tough battle between the cupcakes and the afternoon tea, but then I remembered I was totally planning to start my New Year/New Me diet the following day, and that was basically all the encouragement I needed to order the afternoon tea and a cupcake to take home. Whoops. (In my defence, I did start eating more sensibly the next day. I´m not saying I’ll be able to keep it up forever, obviously, but at least I’m trying…) Anyway, sheer greediness aside, it was good to catch up with friends we haven’t seen in far too long, and it was a also a nice way to round off the Christmas holidays, so those extra calories were totally worth it.
Neighbours is back!
On Monday, my favourite soap opera, Neighbours, returned after a 5 week hiatus. This break was a particularly hard one for us Neighbours fans, because they’d left us with a not-even-remotely-shocking cliffhanger, in which it transpired that Toadie’s first wife, Dee, who plunged dramatically into the ocean on her wedding day, 13 years ago, might NOT, in fact, be dead after all, as everyone had assumed. I mean, seriously, who’d a thunk it? Other than every single person who’s ever seen Neighbours, obviously, and who therefore knows perfectly well that when a character is presumed dead, it means they definitely AREN’T dead, and will undoubtedly return at the most inconvenient time possible?
In this case, Dee returned just at the point where Toadie’s third wife, Sonya, had discovered she was pregnant with her best friend, Mark’s, baby, which she’s having as a favour for him and his girlfriend, Steph, who just so happens to be Toadie’s second wife, although technically that was just a fake marriage, to cover up the fact that Steph was pregnant with her best friend’s husband’s lovechild at the time. Are you sure you’re following this? So, Toadie’s third wife is having a baby with the boyfriend of Toadie’s second wife (Because I don’t know about you, but I can’t see a single flaw with that plan AT ALL. Seriously, what could POSSIBLY go wrong?), and meanwhile his first wife has just returned from the dead. Tough times for Toadie. (Don’t worry, that’s not his REAL name. It’s short for ‘Toadfish’, which… isn’t his real name, either. His name is actually Jarrod. OBVIOUSLY.)
Are you SURE you got all that?
Anyway, needless to say, even although I’m pretty sure Neighbours is just parodying itself at this point, I’ve missed it over these past few weeks, and have been waiting for Dee to rise from the dead for… well, 13 years… so its return was a pretty good way to start the week! Speaking of good ways to start the week…
I know it probably seems a bit odd to list “blogging”as one of the positive things from the week, given that it’s what I do EVERY week, so it doesn’t really seem worth mentioning, does it? Don’t get me wrong, I’m ALWAYS happy that I get to blog for a living, but this week I’ve been particularly grateful: not just because we’ve had some truly depressing weather, which I’m really glad I don’t have to try to travel to work in, but also because I’ve had one of those bursts of motivation I sometimes get, and have spent the week frantically scribbling down ideas, and thinking, “Wow, I can’t believe this is my actual JOB!”
There’s also been a ton of good, blogging-related news this week. On Monday, I found out that my blog has been ranked first in the HIBS100 index of UK-based lifestyle bloggers, which came as a complete surprise to me, and made me feel like I’d kicked off the first working week of the year on a good note. I also found out about a few very exciting projects I’ll be working on this year, and which I’ll hopefully be able to share more about soon. The bad news is that I’m going to be really, really busy over the next few weeks, but hey: this year has already been better than all of last year was for me, so if being busy is the worst that happens, I don’t think I can complain too much, really. (I will if I get that cold, though. I mean, I’m not a saint, for God’s sake!)
As I said, even my worst days as a blogger are better than my best ones in a “normal” job, and I try my best to remember that every day, but my motivation hit an all-time low last year, between one thing and another, so it feels good to be able to fully appreciate it again, and to feel like things are going well – or at least not going terribly, anyway. (Yeah, I’m worrying about that whole ‘tempting fate’ thing again. Please don’t smite me, universe, OK?)
How was your week?
[Three Things Friday is my attempt to focus on the good things in life, however small, rather than dwelling on the negatives. Every day, I write down three positive or happy thoughts in my journal, and every week I share three of those things here on my blog. You can read more about this project, and how it started, here.]
