When you have absolutely *nothing* to wear…
I can’t believe it’s the middle of January, and I’m just getting round to publishing my first outfit post of the year.
Actually, scratch that: I CAN believe it. (The lack of outfit posts, I mean, not the fact that it’s the middle of January. I really can’t quite believe that…) The fact is, I’ve long since realised that winter just isn’t my season when it comes to fashion. No matter how hard I try, or how much I like winter looks on other people, I just can’t get on with all of the boots and the tights and the pesky “layering”… which means I’ve spent most of this month so far staring into my closet and complaining that I have NOTHING to wear. NOTHING. AT ALL.
This is a complete lie obviously: I mean, I do know that. I actually have so much to wear that I could probably wear a different outfit every day for weeks on end without repeating, at this point. (Briefly considers doing this, as some kind of “challenge””. Immediately realises that it would be really boring and hard, and I don’t like boring, hard things. Also, was probably exaggerating with the whole “weeks on end” bit. Get a grip, Amber, seriously…) The problem is, I just don’t liiiiiikkkeee any of it. Or I do, but I’d need it to be summer to be able to wear the things I like, and it’s not going to be summer for a very long time, so woe is me. Getting dressed is haaaaaard, you guys.
Anyway, rather than meet the challenge head on, I’ve mostly just been retreating into those good ol’ jeans-and-a-sweater outfits I love so much. I have actually photographed some of them indoors, and will do a roundup at the end of the month (Betchya can’t wait for THAT, huh?), but the weather has been too dark and rainy to take what I think of as “proper” outfit photos, and I’ve kind of slipped into the mindset that a good outfit is wasted on a day I can’t get a decent photo of it (If a fashion blogger wears a great outfit, but no one on the internet sees it, did it even happen?), so, yeah, it hasn’t been a good month for clothes, folks.
Last week, though, we got some snow. Now, the one good thing about snow is that it isn’t rain, and the other good thing about snow is that it makes for a really easy photo backdrop, so I decided it was time to delve back into the closet, and put together an outfit that didn’t include jeans. Well, this outfit succeeds in that respect, but it is very formulaic for me, in that it’s one of those four outfit formulas I always fall back on.
When you feel like you have nothing to wear (Even when you have…), though, I find those formulas can be a complete Godsend: they allow you to throw together an outfit that’s just as easy as jeans, and which requires just as little thought, too. Which pretty much describes this outfit, really: I’ve worn both the skirt and sweater many times before on this site, and I’ve worn both of them quite recently, too, but who cares? It’s something other than jeans, at least, so here I am, with my second day hair and the start of the cold I mentioned last week (And which DID turn into a fairly nasty one: because OF COURSE it did!), trying my best not to fall over in the snow. I think we can safely say that normal service has resumed…
P.S. Usual disclaimers apply here: yes, I was wearing a coat, no I didn’t walk around in thick snow all day in high heels (the paths were all clear, as were the roads, I just deliberately stepped into some snow to get a better photo, because I’m shallow like that…), no I didn’t freeze to death, and no clothes or bloggers were harmed in the making of this post. As you were.

Although it’s nowhere as cold where I live, I’ve been thrown into a fashion slump as well. Like you, I have a few outfit formulas I follow when I’m not bothered – they are incredibly life saving!

I hate everything in my wardrobe, so much so that I took to the internet on Saturday night and bought new things. Love love love your skirt, by the way.

It is a charming outfit! But your hair… it’s now achieved fairytale status, and I can but gawp at its prettiness. Well done Amber’s genes and Amber’s commitment to looking after it! x

Ah, this comment just made my day ❤

Ugh, I totally get you on this one: where I live is usually between -10ºC and -20ºC during Wintertime, so wearing anything interesting (or even looking remotely decent once you leave the house) is pretty much impossible. I am always looking forward to Spring, when I can play real outfits and not to look like a complete mess, or like an Arkham Asylum for the Criminally Insane escaped patient…
But you, on the other hand, do look great on your seasonal style. I am sure you make double the quantity of good outfits during the cold months than anyone else. ?

I always think you are very brave with walking around on snow in heels. If that was me I would be flat on my face in no time. Also you hair look lovely. xx

I could wear a different outfit everyday for weeks on end but I too am in a slump at the moment but can barely summon the energy to pick anything out! I’m not sure if it’s the dark mornings, dark evenings, grey days but meh. I just feel meh.
Your hair looks fantastic here, the very opposite of meh in fact! Hope you are feeling better now x

I totally understand the “I have nothing to wear” feeling, I am really going through this stage at the moment. Am thinking of having a MAJOR closet clearout. I don’t wear any of it anyway…
On a different note, I have to agree with Alex on your hair. I have been reading your blog almost daily for almost two years, and I STILL cannot get over how gorgeous your hair is. *sigh of appreciation*
Have a lovely day

I’m so over this point of the year and dressing for the cold already, I hear you… Also, was totally counting on that snow for my own blogger backdrop and it seems someone stole it all. All I got was a few tiny flakes and a soggy ground 🙁 I am still yet to have the perfect blanket snow scene for my photos! Disclaimer: I only want snow for my photos, it can then swiftly melt please and thank you.

Love this outfit 🙂

I completely get you on this one. In the part of Canada where I live, winter lasts around 6 months. It is always cold, often going below -20C. My winter wardrobe is the largest, but it’s all the same formula — jeans and sweaters. Fortunately, I do have a nice assortment of coats and boots — much to my husband’s dismay — but I feel that if I have to live in this nutty weather, then I may as well look good when I am out. We have at least three more months to go. Often we still have snow at the end of April. But finally the days are getting a wee bit longer and the sun is setting just before 5:00, rather than 4:30.

My favourite seasons for clothes are autumn and summer. Summer obviously because of dresses, nice tops etc but I actually love tights and boots! Knee high boots over jeans or with different coloured tights and wolly jumper dresses are great. I agree with the other commenter that your hair is very pretty, I was thinking that myself too!

I’m in the hibernation phase of my year, and find it difficult to even leave the house. So I certainly don’t want to think about clothes, and wear a very small assortment of warm trousers and tops. Can’t wait until spring. I love that skirt
Steph
I am forever in awe of your ability to make a fairly dressy outfit look so effortless – I have a near enough identical skirt (though admittedly mine is more mid calf length which does make it tricky to appear casual as I can’t bring myself to wear it without heels) and struggle to wear it in any other setting than an ‘occasion’. And then there’s you, rocking it as though it was designed to wear for a walk in the snow! Flawless, as always! I would probably look like a little girl who got lost on the way to a party!

You look AMAZING! And love the snow. We are having a heatwave here in Australia!

It was the same for me at the beginning of colder days. But then, I got my christmas present: a wonderful mimosa yellow coat by Boden. And now, every outfit is made vibrant by this piece of outerwear. I even enjoy going out of the house in the morning just to make this coat parade in the town. And some people stop me to tell me I look like sunshine. It is a nice reconciliation with the harshness of winter.
I saw you got also a lovely mint green coat. Sure none of your outfits will look meh with that one on (not that I ever had seen you looking boring on the blog). I’m looking forward seeing you in the mint coat. I hope the weather will be nice enough for you to take lovely pictures soon. I’ m also glad you recovered.

I am so incredibly happy to read a post where you truly sound happy. I finished with a big smile on my face 🙂

Amber, I will no longer be able to look at your blog because all I’ll be able to think of will be *that haaaaaiiiiirrrrrrrrrr* subsequently followed by me weeping because of how red and pretty and long and perfect it is. <3
