Last weekend, my friend Stephanie was in town for a flying visit to the Edinburgh Festival. Last time I saw her, we managed to grab a quick dinner together in London, so this time we decided to grab a slightly lengthier dinner in Edinburgh. Next time, I think we might aim for Paris. Or Rome, maybe. Actually, it would be pretty cool to have dinner ALL OVER Europe, and why the hell not? Oh yeah: money. Damn.

Anyway, Terry and I headed into the city on Saturday night to meet up with Steph, who had just arrived. A lot of the restaurants in Edinburgh don’t take reservations during the Festival, because it’s just so busy, but we were lucky enough to get a table right away at Browns on George Street, which is a chain Terry and I eat in fairly often, and always enjoy. This time, rather than sitting inside the restaurant, we were in a little marquee they’d set up on the pavement outside, in a bid to try to cope with all of the extra people who pile into the city every August. I had my doubts that it would be warm enough, and we did have to move inside for hot chocolate at the end of the meal, but it was a nice change to get to sit outside: or outside-ish, anyway. We were within earshot of the fireworks which go off from Edinburgh Castle at the end of the Tattoo every night, and we also had a great view of the torrential rainstorm that started up right before said fireworks. Oh, Edinburgh, never change!

I started off with the best intentions of taking some awesome food shots to share, but, as is always the case with me, as soon as our sharing platter of starters arrived, I forgot all about that, and just got stuck in. This is why I’m not a food blogger. We did have a nice meal, though (I had the burger: I almost always have the burger in restaurants. I hardly ever eat burgers – or meat, really – the rest of the time, but as soon as I see one on a menu, my mouth starts watering uncontrollably…), and a lovely catch-up, which was, once again, much too short. Still: having not seen each other for the past two years, Stephanie and I have now manged no less than TWO meet-ups in the space of a few weeks, so that has to be a good thing, right?

And I’m really not joking about Paris. You should NEVER joke about Paris, people…

The more photos you post of Edinburgh the more I want to visit. I’ve never been north of the border (am totally thinking north of The Wall now!) but I think I need to visit. What time of year would you recommend? X

  • Oh, but that bag is so beautiful and so, so out of my price range! Wanted a mint green bag for ages, funnily enough, to match with my guess-where-it’s-from cardigan. Black and mint green is also a most excellent combination.

  • I adore this outfit. I’m definitely one on those strange people that enjoys a chilly rainy day. I’d happily swap you weather most days, especially come summer I’m constantly whining to my husband that I want your weather.

      • After a few years of living in Dublin (which, I assume, has similar weather), my impression was that all those people who envied me the chilly summers had never really lived through one. One friend in particular came to visit after telling me for years how he hated warm summer days, yet after just one week of 13 degrees and permanent light drizzle in mid-July, he suddenly couldn’t wait to return to t-shirt weather. (That was right after he absent-mindedly said “Wow, this country must be beautiful in summer… oh.”)

Oh well. In a few weeks, I’ll see what Edinburgh weather in October is like! After seeing this, I’ve started to think that I can’t POSSIBLY visit in style without a mint green bag? It’s gorgeous! (So is the whole outfit.)

You look amazing, just like always! I think it was a very interesting color combination, but I liked it a lot.
The food also looks really good, makes me really hungry. If I ever go to Edinbourgh I will defenitely check it out!

PS: I just got my first ASOS order and I can totally understand why you love that shop so much. 🙂 Free shipping and everything, it was amazing! (I bought that greenish-floral midi skirt, I love it! 😀 )

  • This dress is so chic and adorable! I wish I could pull it off as well as you do. I totally know what you mean about not being diligent about taking photos at restaurants. Besides, it can just be awkward to be that “weirdo”!

I am ashamed to say this is my first comment on a blog ever but after your last post, I feel compelled. I’m not a blogger and only follow a few blogs really (never enough time!) and while I thoroughly enjoy yours, I never said a word. Please forgive me for lurking all this time, enjoying your hard work and not giving back. You deserve that!

So that said, I love your style, love your funny natural writing, love your humility, and totally share your love for cardigans. You’re adorable and thanks so much for all you share!

  • Dear Amber,

  • I do love that bag, it’s beautiful. I could never afford anything like that because uh, two kids & a boden/mini boden habit, so I like to look at your nice bags instead. Maybe one day I’ll be able to save up for something designer as a treat!

I’ve been to Edinburgh once- I saw the train station, got a taxi to the Malmaison (they upgraded me to a suite, it was amazing & I didn’t want to leave) then went for dinner nearby along the water. Don’t even know what water it was as it was dark when I arrived & dark even we left the following day for the airport (work trip).

  • Oh, my husband is the same way. When he sees a burger, it matters not what else is on the menu. Hell, we could go to Paris, and that is what he would order! As far as taking pictures…. I also always mean to. Then I get hungry and forgetful. Whatever.

  • Love what you’re wearing, and that your cardigan is matching your bag.
You should definitely buy this cardigan in every color, since you look great and you get so much wear out of them. 🙂
