Cocktail Hour | The Terry Draper
Have I ever mentioned that Terry makes a mean cocktail? Terry makes a mean cocktail – and we have the groaning cocktail cabinet to prove it. (I say, “cocktail cabinet” – it’s one of our kitchen cupboards. It’s the thought that counts, though, right?)
Terry doesn’t really follow recipies when he’s making cocktails – or not very strictly, anyway. He’ll normally look up the recipe of something new he wants to try, but we can both be a little fussy with our cocktails, so he’ll gradually tweak and refine it until he gets his own version on whatever he’s making – or sometimes something totally different.
This cocktail was originally based on Don Draper’s favourite drink: The Old Fashioned. In Terry’s hands, however, it’s evolved into something a little more fresh and zingy: I call it the ‘Terry Draper’, and here’s how he makes it:
- 1 Shot of Whisky (Doesn’t have to be expensive)
- 1 Shot of Triple Sec (Or any orange liqueur)
- 2 Shots of Water
- 3 Shots of orange juice (Roughly the juice of one orange)
- The zest of roughly a quarter of an orange
- Some ice cubes
- You might need some sugar syrup or plain sugar to balance the sweetness to your taste
- A piece of orange to garnish
As I said, if you’re making this, don’t expect it to taste like a classic Old Fashioned, because it don’t. I’m not sure Don Draper would approve, to be honest. If you prefer your cocktails a lighter fresher and fruitier, however (and a touch lighter on the whisky), you just might like it.
Cheers![P.S. Terry asked me to point out that the cocktail in the photo is actually a double – so multiply everything by two!]
