Dressember Day 6: Going Postal

(I know it doesn’t look like it, but this is a dress: or ar least, it was described as a “dress” on the Topshop website, and when I bought it, last year, I saw several teenagers at the local mall wearing this same dress, with nothing but a pair of sheer tights, stilettos  and a smile. At least I’m wearing leggings and sparkly socks with mine. And the ever-present rubber boots, obviously. Winter, I hate you. .)

Yesterday, after three days of No Snow, a tractor finally appeared in our street and cleared the roads, at which point Terry and I went out and did a dance of joy, because AT LAST, people! At last the road was clear! The snow had stopped! The airport would be able to clear its backlog of delayed flights from last week’s snow/the air traffic controller strike! Royal Fail would have no excuse to keep on withholding my mail! A semblance of normal life would return, and I would get to go on holiday!

I went to sleep feeling, if not happy, at least reassured that all of these things had a small chance of coming to pass.

I woke up to a complete white-out, courtesy of a blizzard that only started to ease off about an hour ago, allowing  me to walk to the local post office to give them a parcel to keep for the next few weeks (no mail going out, needless to say, but it was either that or just leave it in the house for the next two weeks) and snap these quick photos.

The airport is closed.

The motorway between here and the airport is closed.

The roads leading to the motorway are closed/blocked/inaccessible.

Royal Fail are… failing. Royally.

It’s looking highly unlikely that our flight will be able to take off tomorrow as scheduled. It seems like a massive delay is probably the best we can hope for, and that’s assuming we can get to the airport at all. If we do get there, meanwhile, I’m also kind of worried about getting back: the UK just doesn’t seem to be able to cope with any amount of snowfall at all without plunging into chaos, so who knows, maybe this current drama will be simply the precursor to another “We are going to miss Christmas!” fiasco, just like last year!

Meanwhile, Terry travelled valiantly through the snow and managed to retrieve these from the Royal Fail Not-Sorting Office:

(Er, I’d claim this photo was blurred in a deliberate attempt to hide my address, but that would be a total lie. Actually, I think it’s blurred because my hands were shaking with the excitement of getting some omgmail for the first time in over a week…)

Now, if I could have made a deal with the devil (and I totally would at this point, by the way, so Beelzebub, if you’re out there? Call me!) and had been told that out of all of the packages Royal Fail are holding hostage right now, I could choose just four to receive today, only one of these four would have made the list. So I did get my spechul sunscreen, but the most expensive and important package remains lost among a giant pile o’fail, and I’ve no idea if it’ll even be here by the time I get back: this weather is supposed to continue for a week at least, and the Fail told Terry they currently have thousands and thousands of unsorted packages there, with more arriving every day (don’t even ask how packages can get to them, but they can’t get them to us…), so I’m guessing it’ll take them weeks to get back to normal. I just really hope they don’t lose anything among the jumble of mail.

I DID get the important delivery of a packet of heel grips and a cheap iPhone case, though. So that’s good.

Meanwhile, people on Twitter continue to direct tweets at me complaining about their overly-pleasant summer weather. Funnily enough, I’m finding it a little difficult to sympathise with them on that one…

Anyway!  Our current plan is to try to get to the airport tomorrow if we can, and see what happens. Dressember will obviously have to take a bit of a backseat on the days we’re travelling (or hoping to travel), but I’ll continue with the challenge and post the photos whenever I manage to get online again. I’ve also scheduled a few posts for next week, for the anniversaries we were going on holiday in order to celebrate: I should warn you, though, that they’re reeeeaalllly long, and, well, pretty depressing. They may help put all of this snow chaos into perspective, though.

Keep your fingers crossed for us, folks!

Crossing everything, you really deserve to go on holiday!
I have never seen a so-called “drop in quality” when you do beforehand holiday posts. I always read and enjoy them every other day, while looking out for holiday news on foreveramber.

Can’t even begin to imagine how you feel at the moment, but I know how I react when I’m really stressed, and it’s not a feeling I wish on anyone!

    Sending good luck your way.

  • Poor Amber… over here in the northwest of the US, we’ve had snow, freeze, a slight melt, and then a fast, hard freeze. So we’re kinda coated in ice at this point. Driving is pretty- um- challenging.

  • Oh, wow, that is a lot of snow. Horrible, horrible snow. I hope it clears up enough for you to go on vacation.

Here’s hoping you get to go on you hols!

I have adopted your phrase of Royal Fail now….they’ve let me down numerous times over the years (I’m sure I have LJ and FB rants about it) and now they appear to have lost the sunglasses that I’d ordered…..and it turns out they were the last of their kind on the website I used. A small niggle compared to yours but it’s all I’ve got!! LOL!

Up here in northern New York (NOT by the City… 8 hours from the City, actually) we are also having a snow fall of epic proportions, though we seem to be more prepared than the UK. (that doesn’t stop people from driving too fast into the bank of the road or a tree or something dumb like that)

I have been checking here a few times today, to hopefully hear good news about your plane taking off, so I thought it was high time I actually put something in writing to that effect.

So with fingers and toes crossed, I hope the next thing you post is that you are finally in the Canaries’ cloudy but 20-something degree weather!

    Best of luck!

  • Oh this snow in Scotland is really awful!
My boyfriend lives there and i bought some things to send to his address and now they wont arrive in time before he leaves (if the flight wont be cancelled that is!) to visit me in Germany.
i really hate that the UK is so unorganised when it gets to snow. alright i have to admit that Germany is not any better but at least we get our mail here!

i have my fingers crossed for you xxx
