I was thinking this week about how photographing my outfits has changed my style. And, I mean, it hasn’t CHANGED it, exactly: I still like more or less the same things I liked before I started fashion blogging, but these days I’m definitely much more likely to actually WEAR those things, rather than just buying them and leaving them to hang in the closet, for fear that people will mock me for being over-dressed.

These days, well, I STILL worry that people will mock me, to be perfectly honest, but I no longer worry that I don’t have enough of an excuse to wear the clothes I want, because there’s ALWAYS an excuse, even if it’s as simple as, “Because I felt like it.”

Fashion blogging may have given me the confidence to wear the outfits I want to (most of the time, anyway), though, but it also almost stopped me wearing this one.

You see, on Saturday morning, I woke up and I really wanted to wear this ASOS circle skirt, which is a couple of years old now, but still one of my favourite items of clothing. I ALSO, however, wanted to try to take some outfit photos, purely because it was sunny outside, and I’ve learned the hard way that if I don’t grab the opportunity to take photos any-time it’s sunny, I’d basically have no photos at all. Which would be a tragedy, I’m sure you’ll agree. Ahem.

“I can’t wear a gingham skirt if I’m going to take outfit photos,” I told myself. “Because I was wearing a gingham skirt in my last set of photos, and THAT was the third one of the summer as it was. It can’t just be ALL gingham skirts, all the time, or people will start thinking I have some kind of weird obsession with them, and even although that’s totally true, weird obsessions aren’t exactly the kind of thing you want to advertise, are they? People will start calling me The Gingham Skirt Girl, and I mean, I know I’ve always secretly wanted an affectionate nickname, but that one’s just lame.”

Then I thought about it some more, and you know what would be REALLY lame? Not wearing something you love, just because of your stupid blog.

So I wore the skirt. Because I felt like it.

And now I think I’ll go and look into changing my name to The Gingham Skirt Girl. It has a certain ring to it, after all…

  • I am glad you are wearing this skirt again because I love it and it is your style.
Unfortunately I still haven’t got a skirt in this full swing style, they are so feminine!

I know about taking every opportunity for a photoshoot. Rain all week here…

  • This post made me laugh – I go through the exact same thought process most weekends when the sun comes out. As it happens, I think I’m also subconsciously going for some sort of gingham title as I’ve now bought gingham trousers and two gingham tops within the space of a month. But of course, I can’t blog about them all back to back. Or can I. Can I?!

  • Good for you! I (obviously) don’t post the exact same outfit twice on my blog, mostly because I don’t usually wear the exact same outfit multiple times. But I’m also using the same pieces…often back to back. Because if I like something, you can bet I’m wearing it as often as possible! And I love it when I see repeats from bloggers. It reminds me that you’re ‘real’!

  • Heh. Last month my niece got married in a beautiful ceremony outside by a river with mountains in the background. She wore a beautiful custom made full length lace dress and was barefoot. The reception was a roast pig BBQ outside under tents, the weather was perfect. It was a fun, if not exactly traditional combination of casual with formal touches, exactly what the bride & groom wanted. My sister (not the mother of the bride) was very concerned when she found out I was going to wear an uber full skirted tea length vintage Vogue silk dress I’d made with a crinoline petticoat. It wasn’t Scarlett O’Hara on her way to a cotillion full, but it was fairly floofy. Since the fashion blogs I follow are this one and other independent minded often retro styles, it never even occurred to me that I shouldn’t wear what I love combined with old fashioned glamour. If it worries my sister who is very concerned with current trends, bonus.

  • I love this skirt. I tend to fall in love with things and buy two or three very similar items all in one go. And recently I’ve been obsessed with my Keds. To the point that one of my posts is named keds again because I wore them 3 weeks in a row. Maybe you should take out the skirt bit and just be Gingham Girl, Shooperwomans Skirted alter ego. Clearly I read to any comics as a kid.

  • I have the same dilemma too sometimes, but I think it’s better to show people how versatile your wardrobe is as well as the full range of it. I like it when a blogger re-wears something in a new combination of accessories or colours 🙂

  • I love this circle skirt on you, Amber. I think I am in love with circle skirts. Just so flattering and shows off the waistline. I imagine you have a fair amount of cardigans, I feel like I do. I also love the red on you as well. I almost wish it would rain here in NC, as the weather is back to high heat

Hi Amber – I found your website via YLF (Angie is so awesome at sharing other fabulous blogs!) and was instantly drawn to your style because it’s very similar to my own! I am currently trawling through – and madly Pinning – your outfit posts for inspiration. I have some similar pieces but am tired of wearing them the same way (ie, black with black and black and oh look a white tee… *snooze*). I am particularly mad for that gingham skirt – I have been tossing up for a while whether I could pull off gingham at my age… but you’re right when you say wear it because you love it. I intend to make that my new fashion mantra 🙂

Thanks for the hit of happy fashion!

  • I’m with everyone else, wear this one & all the gingham often (did you buy that dress yet 😉 ? )

I like being a little dressed, I tend to wear a skirt everyday in summer to work or meeting friends & save shorts for wknds / kids activities. Life’s too short to dress in joggers & leave your good stuff hanging up!

  • I had this revelation a few years ago after amassing quite a collection of pretty dresses and shoes and then never wearing them, choosing instead to wear just jeans and tshirts to college. What, I asked myself, was the point in having these nice things if I never wore them.
So, I started to. And whilst I know I’ve got myself a reputation for being perpetually overdressed, so much so that people started to ask why I wasn’t wearing heels on the odd occasion that I don’t, ultimately I love it. I buy things which I like and I wear them because I like them.

  • LOL it is funny how blogging can warp a person’s brain regarding their wardrobe choices.

Really there needs to be a contest to see who can be the most overdressed blogger. Well, I take that back. There might be a few winners out there already.

  • I remember this skirt of yours, and I also remember how much I really wanted to buy it for myself too. 😛 I’m glad you wore it because it’s my favorite gingham skirt of yours, and it’s definitely totally different from the one you were wearing on your previous post. But I get why you thought this way, because I’m guilty of falling into this trap from time to time.
Now that I look at the skirt again, I think that a dress I bought recently, has a really similar print, although I’m not sure whether or not mine is considered gingham print. I’ll post it next week, so I’ll see what others will say about it.
