I need a foil blanket…

Yeah, it was the cold. Only at night? At night it turns into the flu, and I lie awake wearing all the clothes I can possibly wrap around my body, accessorized with two hot water bottles, one heating pad and a blanket. And I am STILL COLD. Monday night was rough. On Tuesday, I felt a little better. “Am almost cured!” I thought, smugly. “Will get a good night’s sleep tonight, and will wake up in the morning as good as new!”

I am not as good as new.  And I did not get “a good night’s sleep”. Neither did Terry, on account of my shaking like a leaf because I was so cold, and repeatedly asking him if he could take me to the hospital so they could wrap me in one of those foil blanket things you see on people with hypothermia in the movies. (Note to self: check eBay to see if you can maybe buy them things.) Seriously, I have never been so cold in all my life, and I’m actually not sure whether I feel cold because I’m ill, or whether I just feel ill because it’s SO FREAKING COLD. There’s more snow forecast for tonight, too, and seriously, if I wasn’t due to leave the country at the weekend for warmer climes, I’d be willing to sell my soul right now for a plane ticket to somewhere warm. It’s THAT cold.

So, today, none of us are really on top form. Not even Rubin, who used Terry’s repeated trips to the kitchen to refill my hot water bottles as an excuse to bark the house down, and we had to bring him into bed with us to get him to shut up. This might have worked out OK (hell, any extra body heat AT ALL is welcome right now as far as I’m concerned), except he only wanted to sleep ON MY CHEST and that… was not so good.

So. This week has really sucked, to be honest, and it has sucked so much that I suspect my entire holiday will be spent recovering from it. So that’s just great! Now I’m just waiting for Terry to catch whatever it is I’ve had. Or for the house to fall down.

On the plus side, the Week O’Fail has totally distracted me from the fear of flying…

  • But hey – at least you're not this sick on your holiday! :]

Damn that sucks. At least you're going on holiday soon. Growing up here, i never really understood why Florida and the like was so popular with northeasterners. When i was in Edinburgh one winter and i saw a billboard advertising £49 flights to Tenerife, i understood.

have you got a 15 tog duvet, thermal socks, warmed yourself from the inside out, got a foot warmer, once your feet are cold from the flooring the rest of you stays cold so sometimes that fixes things, errm what else…double glazing??

i just have an average duvet and double glazing and am warm at night, no heating…it must be cause you have a temperature and are going from extreme to another, nothing seems to take away the chill when its a temperature except regular painkiller, ibuprofen and paracetamol together…also another trick is to rub vicks on your feet and that can make you feel a whole lot better by working through your whole body, have tried this one and it does have some effect on a cold, you feel better in the morning…

hope you manage to get rid of it soon, nothing worse than being ill over xmas and you should avoid that at least…funny that your not in contact with a lot of people working from home…i think mum gives us the cold every year! it always happens with us, mum then kids then me, theo avoids it…get well soon x

this is the heated foot pad/slippers, which is a godsend to me to help my whole body keep the heat in especially after coming in or if the their is frost outside and the floor is freezing, it is usb, but you can get electric, like you i am sat at computer a lot though so this is easier for me

  • I don't know about eBay (though it seriously does have everything!), but camping shops should have the foil blankie thingie. We have one, which has never been used (luckily the "stuck on a mountain overnight" scenario never happened!).

Hope tonight is better for you. Get well soon, so you can have a great holiday!

  • Gosh, this really sucks! You have all my sympathy. I hope you'll be better in no time! I have a heating pad as well and whenever I told anybody about it they just laughed out loud as if this was something hilariously funny… it just saves my life every winter!

  • Poor you! Hot Toddy. You definitely need Hot Toddy. Whiskey, lemon juice, honey and hot water (add sugar if it's not sweet enough). Hopefully that will help you to sleep it off.

    Get well soon!
