Lancome Hypnose Precious Cells Mascara

Review: Lancome Hypnose Precious Cells Mascara

If you’re blessed with a very good memory, you may well remember me mentioning that I’d picked up a tube of Lancome’s Hypnose Precious Cells mascara at the airport this summer.

And that was pretty much all I ever said about it, because when I got home I became so obsessed with the waterproof version of Hypnose Drama that it was the only thing I ever wanted to wear. I did have a quick play with Precious Cells, but nothing could drag me away from the Drama, so I threw it in a drawer and forgot all about it. Lately, though, my tube of Hypnose Drama has started to try out, so I decided to give Precious Cells a whirl. Here’s how I got on…

As you probably know, what sets Precious Cells apart from the regular version of Hypnose, is the fact that it’s designed to condition and nourish the lashes as well as prettifying them: in other words, if you use it regularly enough, you should notice that your own lashes become longer and stronger. Now, I’m going to tell you straight up that I’m not the best person to comment on that side of it: I don’t use this mascara anything like regularly enough to know whether it’s making a difference, so this review focuses more on how the product makes lashes look, rather than on how much it makes them grow. What I can tell you is that I use this maybe 4-5 days out of seven, and have been doing so for the past two weeks or so, and I don’t see any difference in my lashes, although I didn’t really expect to (and certainly not in such a short space of time). I will be continuing to use it at roughly the same frequency, though, so if I do suddenly notice a growth spurt, I’ll be sure to report back.

So, on to the mascara itself. The wand is ong and skinny, just the way I like ’em. It’s easy to use, coats the lashes evenly, and there’s minimal residue on my eyelids afterwards. As you can see, I have this in black, or “Densifying Black”, to give it its proper title, but it’s also available in brown and blue (both also “densifying”).

For comparison, here are my lashes before mascara:

They’ve been curled here, but are otherwise bare.

Here they are after a couple of slicks of Precious Cells:

(Excuse the cockeyed look: I was finding it almost impossible to keep my eyes open in the face of the flash!)

So, it’s nice, but it’s not hugely dramatic, which is really my only criticism, because when it comes to mascara, I’m all about the drama. On the plus side, it doesn’t clump, it has a nice lengthening effect, it makes my lashes nice and fluttery, and although it does drag the curl out very slightly, it’s much better at locking it in place than most of the other mascaras I’ve tried. If I use this without curling my lashes first, it will add a bit of curl on its own, too, which is always a plus point.

The downside? The main one I can see with this is simply that it’s not Hypnose Drama. For the money, I’d rather just buy HD, which creates the much more dramatic look I tend to go for, but those of you who prefer a more natural effect may well prefer this one. For myself, I’d be really interested in a waterproof version: I always find them much better at locking in curl, and if Precious Cells looked more like Hypnose Drama or L’Extreme when I was wearing it, I’d be much more inclined to make it my regular, day-to-day mascara, and find out if those lash regenerating claims are actually true. As it is, I’m wearing this on the days I don’t have plans and am happy to go for a quick, easy look: if I’m going out somewhere, I’ll normally switch back to HD, although that’s really down to personal preference rather than any problem with Precious Cells itself.
