Last of the Wiggle Dresses
Well, after a couple of weeks of me sulking around the house and declaring that summer was, like, SO LAST SEASON, the sun decided to grace us with its presence again this week, and I SHOULD THINK SO TOO, AUGUST.
It was just in the nick of time, too: I’d been waiting for weeks – WEEKS, people – for an opportunity to stand in the middle of the road in this ASOS dress (Before you go clicking on that link, let me first of all tell you it’s currently sold out. I know. I’ve linked to it anyway, purely because ASOS do sometimes re-stock things, and the only way you’ll know is by obsessively checking the site every few minutes to see if your size is available yet. Not that I’ve ever done that myself, you understand: I’ve just heard about it. On the internet. Ahem.), and finally my time had come.
This dress is one of three I have in this exact shape, so I guess you could say I’m a fan. (I guess you could ALSO say I’m a shopaholic, but you know, please don’t: I already know…) As much as I love the shape, though, it’s kind of an awkward one in terms of fit. There’s a huge amount of excess fabric around the pocket/stomach area, for instance, which is great for hiding the belly, but also great for making you LOOK like you’re hiding your belly, which can make people wonder if you’re anticipating a happy event.
Also, in its natural state (In the “wild”, if you will…) this dress is what I think of as a TRUE midi. Most of the dresses and skirts people refer to as “midi length” these days are actually knee-length, or just below the knee. When ASOS describe something as a “midi”, however, they really mean it, so the dress hits right at that tricky mid-calf point. That’s not the most flattering length on me, so I buy these dresses with the knowledge that I’ll have to have them hemmed, at the very least, and maybe some other alterations besides. For that reason, when this one first crossed my radar, I didn’t rush to buy, it.
“I’ll wait a few weeks,” I told myself, as I added it to my ASOS ‘saved’ list, “And if I STILL want it then, I’ll think about buying it.”
Cut to a couple of days later, when I happened to check the ASOS website and noticed that the dress had sold out… in every size except mine. Uh-oh.
There’s nothing makes me want something more than the knowledge I can’t have it, so in order to save myself the trouble of the aforementioned constant refreshing of the ASOS website, so I went ahead and bought it. And I’m pretty sure I got the last one they had, because as soon as I added it to my basket, it was completely sold out. It truly was The Last of the Wiggle Dresses.
Anyway, it DID have to be hemmed, so I couldn’t wear it right away, and then I started to think I would’t get to wear it AT ALL this year because of the weather, so I was very pleased to be able to “debut” it this week. Now I’m just crossing all of my fingers and toes, and hoping September will be kind to us: mostly because I currently have a giant white midi skirt on its way to me, and… it’s totally fine to wear a giant white skirt in September, right? RIGHT?
