All the leaves are brown, and the sky is grey…

Posted on 2 min read

OK, so the leaves aren’t so much “brown” as they are long gone, but the sky is most definitely grey, so I hope you’ll all indulge my California dreamin’ (on such a winter’s day), because OMG YOU GUYS, WE’RE GOING TO CALIFORNIA!

We booked the tickets last week, and I could not be more excited – and not just because there’s a Sephora just a couple of miles away from where we’ll be staying, either. (Also a Zara. And a J Crew. So, when I say I’m going to California, I basically mean I’m going shopping…)

We last visited California back in 2011, which is less recent than it feels to me (Pause for a quick freak-out and some maudlin reflections on the passing of time, and WHERE DOES IT GO? Has someone pressed the fast-forward button on my life or something? Do kids these days even know what a ‘fast forward button” IS, for that matter?), and even although we stayed for three weeks, there are still plenty of things we didn’t get round to seeing (I’m sure there are at least 5 more Sephoras, just as an example…), so we’re really excited to be heading back there later this year.

We didn’t have a vacation last year because we’d just moved into the house, and while I realise that’s the most first-world of all first-world problems, and not something to complain about (I totally did, anyway, though…), I really missed not having something to look forward. We did manage to take a few day trips here and there, and had a long weekend in London/Kent, but I’m the kind of person who likes to have a longer trip to plan, so for the last few days, this one is pretty much all Terry and I have talked about. There’s a Google map. There’s an actual map. There’s a Pinterest board. There’s been a lot of talking, and planning, and re-playing of old videos (one of which is at the top of this page) so we can squeal excitedly (well, I can, anyway. Terry’s not much of a squealer, really…) and go, “Remember that?!” There’s been a lot of excitement, basically.

Oh, and there’s also been the purchase of two new swimsuits. We’re not going for months yet, but, you know, it’s good to be prepared, no?

VERY cool! And VERY jealous!! I’m kind of doing the opposite this year as I’m supposed to be buying a house before the year is out, so I’ll have to live vicariously through you and others…

For shopping you might want to go to Portugal/Spain instead. If you open one of Zara’s pages, change the url between /pt/en/; /us/en/ and /uk/en/ you’ll quickly get why 😉

We’ve been to Spain lots and know Zara is cheaper there – I was actually joking about going for the shopping 🙂

I’m just a tiny bit jealous. 😉 And I got to admit that going to California for me as well basically means I’m going shopping. Luckily my boyfriend has much patience.

Enjoyed watching your little film! I’ve landed in LA so many times before transferring on my way to visiting family in Phoenix, but never actually left the airport! I’d love to go to Hollywood though, looks fab!

Did you know Sephora ships to the UK now? Shipping gets cheaper the more you buy, or that’s what happened with my two orders. Thanks to them and a US break at Christmas I already at VIB level, the downside is you can’t redeem a lot of the offers from overseas.

I did, but it doesn’t seem worth it to me, because I can buy most of what I want here, and not pay the customs/shipping. (Or from the French site, which has cheaper shipping and no import duties..) I just enjoy browsing the stores 🙂

I use some brands of skincare (on ridiculously problem skin) that either I can only get from there or they’re about half the price of EU RRP when the exchange rate is good, but sometimes even Amazon is cheaper for other stuff. I was in Poland for work recently but their Sephora don’t have the same brands, so unfortunately I couldn’t stock up there!

If you are going to the US, you must visit Target and eat at In N Out! And the Fat Dog for brunch in Hollywood. And Mexican food. And the Getty museum. And head down to San Diego if you get a chance, because it is way more relaxed than LA.

So exciting! There’s nothing like the excitement of booking your holiday and then being able to look forward to it – though as soon as you come back you need to book the next one so that you have something new to look forward to, if you’re anything like me at least! :L x

I grew up there, the land is very diverse. Yosemite National Park in spectacular, and I once went to Death Valley in the spring and it was pretty amazing. Lots to see, plenty of shops, but most of the state is farmland.
