List-tastic, baby!

Posted on 3 min read

Has it really been five days since I last updated? Oops. There is no particular reason for this, I’m afraid. I mean, I’d like to say I was suddenly overwhelmed by inspiration and have spent the last five days frantically hammering out The Novel, or that I was whisked off to an exotic sun-drenched island or something, but no. I’m just lazy. So lazy, in fact, that I’m going to write you a list to bring you up to date with the not-very-interesting things I’ve been getting up to recently. Sorry.

1. My hair is still a freaking disaster. Seriously, it turned out to be my most hated haircut ever. I’ve been wearing it up every day since I had it cut, and on Saturday I had to go and buy a whole bunch of new hair clips and alice bands and stuff (because yes, it’s not like I didn’t have enough of those already) to try and fight it back. Gah.

2. I bought these items on the same shopping trip that was made necessary by the fact that I dyed all but one of my white knickers grey in the wash. Yes, I am writing about my underwear on the Internet now. Sorry, mum. People who know me in real life: please pretend you didn’t read this entry next time you see me.

3. Seriously, though, about the knickers… This happens to me roughly once every six weeks, I would say. Do you have any idea how hard it is to buy plain white knickers? They all seem to come with some kind of black trim, which is where the dye comes from. The label says, "wash with similar colours". WHAT DOES IT MEAN? Are you supposed to wash them with dark colours or with white colours? Because either way, the knickers themselves would still turn grey. Am I supposed to hand wash them all? Who has time for that? Not me.

4. It’s OK, that’s me finished talking about my knickers now. It’s safe to read on.

5. On Saturday, Terry borrowed Guitar Hero from one of his friends and we took it with us when we went to visit my parents that night. I liked it so much I made Terry stop at the all-night Tesco on the way home and buy us our own copy. Since then, it’s more or less all I’ve thought about. Nirvana! Pearl Jam! Smashing Pumpkins! Oh, you rock bands of the 90s, how I love you! At night, when I try to sleep, I see those Guitar Hero dots floating in front of my eyes and hear "Even Flow" echoing around my head. In fact, I’m hearing it now…

6. On Thursday, when I was out walking Rubin, we met a man with three dogs, one of which was called "Lazy" and one of which was called "Fatty". I don’t know what the third was called. Not sure I want to know.

7. This weekend, we’re heading south, for the christening of my best friend’s baby.  We’ll be flying into Birmingham, spending a few hours there with Terry’s brother, John (he of kidney-donating fame), and then driving down to Hertfordshire where we’ll stay the night in a hotel before flying back from Luton on Sunday evening, after the christening. Am looking forward to this as I haven’t seen Steph since my wedding, and I haven’t met her little boy at all. Because that’s the kind of bad friend I am. Weirdly, I haven’t started worrying about the flights yet, other than a couple of times when I’ve woken up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat. This is definite progress for me!

8. I had wanted to have ten points in this list, just to make it an even number, but I can’t think of any… oh no, wait!

9. Last night Terry and I watched The Ruins  It was one of those movies which I had to watch mostly through my fingers. Really gory. But at least it got the Guitar Hero dots out of my head for a little while that night, as I lay awake worrying about flesh-eating plants instead.

10. Speaking of Guitar Hero….

I have played Guitar Hero once. And my seven year old nephew kicked my ass and I’ve been too embarrassed to play since.

The coolest–or nerdiest–is when you get a whole BAND together! And the 90s songs are definitely the best. Just make sure you’re in a room with others who weren’t in diapers when those bands were around, or you’ll feel really old.

Okay, now this might be controversial, but I'm gonna say it anyway: why not try black knickers? Much less easy to ruin!

Or, if you want something lighter, nude/flesh coloured are good. 🙂

@ kristabella – ha, those kids of today! I bet they'd easily whip my ass, too. They'd have to rip the guitar out of my cold, dead hands first, though…

@ Amanda – I was actually just thinking how very *old* I would seem to some of my colleagues on account of my music collection! I totally can't wait to start a band, that's definitely next on my list…

@ Diane – oh, I have them in all colours, I have a bit of a lingerie-buying addiction. Any time I buy white, though, I can guarantee I will only have them for a few weeks before I dye them grey!

‘Even Flow’ is my theme tune….

It’s actually pretty cool to know you like it too.

I’m impressed… I’m already semi-worrying about flights in October and next April.

Since you live in Scotland, actually, I meant to ask… any ideas for a not-ruinously-expensive mini honeymoon getaway for a couple of days over New Year…? I’m not flying. Not even thinking about it.

    Alex:

    Two of my faves:-
    http://www.ballachulishhotel.com/
    http://www.dunalastair.co.uk/index.htm

Haven't been at either over New Year, but they're both cosy, romantic hotels in cracking settings.

You can get white knickers from Topshop with *drum roll* white trim!

Guitar hero last night (after a pitcher full of cocktails) was a laugh wasn't it Amber 🙂 Suffice to say, we were crap 🙂

@ Alex – I'm ashamed to say I haven't really holidayed much in Scotland: too cold! But if you fancy a city break, I do recommend Edinburgh, which is beautiful, and especially nice in winter when the Christmas fair is there. It does get v. busy over new year, mind you…

@ Camilla – I know, but we don't have a Topshop near us, unfortunately, and I wanted to be able to just go and buy them and not have to wait for delivery!

It’s another rainy Monday, so I’m throwing it back to our trip to @universalorlando ‘s amazing Volcano Bay water park last month. I’m a bit of a scaredy when it comes to water flumes, but this park had tons of stuff for pretty much everyone: plenty of rides for me, and an amazing splash pad for Max 👶In fact, I’d still be on The Fearless River right now if I possibly could be. Still, doing the laundry and turning the heating on will be just as good, right? Right?! 🌋 🏊‍♀️ .

Good news! We took Max to hospital this morning, and saw two different surgeons, who agreed there was no need to go ahead with the surgery as his lip is healing really well on its own 😅 He’ll definitely have a scar, unfortunately, but that would’ve been the case whether he’d had the surgery or not, and if it turns out to be worse than anticipated, we’ll have the option to have it corrected under local anaesthetic when he’s older. ⁣
⁣
I’m still really upset that this happened in the first place, obviously, but so relieved that we don’t have to put him through a general anaesthetic, and just incredibly grateful that it wasn’t anything worse. I know some parents have to deal with much more serious stuff than this, and my heart goes out to you all: it’s been a rough couple of days, and I’m really grateful to everyone who took the time to comment on yesterday’s post - your stories were so comforting when I was panicking yesterday ❤️ ⁣
⁣
(Old photo, obviously: every time Max sees the selfie camera, he thinks it’s going to be one of those filters where you open your mouth and something happens 😂)⁣

Good news! We took Max...

Totally unrelated photo, but we’ve just spent the morning in Accident & Emergency with Max, who fell on the path outside the house and split his lip open 😥 ⁣
⁣
They tried to stitch it up at A&E, but it was totally impossible with him awake, so they’ve booked him in to have it done under general anaesthetic tomorrow ... Max is absolutely fine: the bleeding stopped quickly, he doesn’t seem to be in pain, and is just his normal, happy little self. I, on the other hand, am a complete wreck: the plastic surgeon he saw today reckons if we don’t have it fixed, his lip will be crooked when it heals, but I’m absolutely *terrified* of the thought of my baby having to have a GA. ⁣
⁣
If you’re a long-time follower, you might know that I have a full-blown phobia of general anaesthetic (I literally had an elective c-section in order to eliminate the possibility of an emergency one, which might have had to be done under GA), so I just can’t get my head to accept that it’s safe and he’ll be fine 😥 ⁣
⁣
Positive stories and advice very welcome: I’m just so terrified, I can’t even imagine how to get through the next 24 hours 😥😥😥

#throwbackthursday to last week, when I needed a sunhat and SPF 50 to leave the house, rather than the current raincoat and wellies situation. Can you tell the post-holiday blues are still in full swing over here? 🌧 .

I posted this on Stories over the weekend, but he looked so cute in it I figured it deserved a spot on the grid, too! This is Max all ready for his friend Eleah’s 1st birthday party on Saturday: despite the jetlag and his continuing obsession with doors of all kinds (He had an entire soft play at his disposal, but he mostly just wanted to open and close the gate into it...) he had an absolute ball, and spent the whole drive home shouting, “HAPPY! HAPPY!” Thanks to @thestirlingstyle for a great party 🥳 🎈 🎉 . (Oh, and that’s his hairbrush in his hand - boy likes to look his best 😉)

We’re back home in not-so-sunny Scotland, but my feed is still stuck in Florida... New post is up on the blog (direct link in Stories..), talking about how we’ve been dealing with toddler jetlag, and why I always hate coming home after a trip...
