Morning Coffee | A New Routine

The New Year starts here, everyone! Well, it does for me, anyway. As I mentioned in my first post of the year, January 12th is effectively my January 1st this year, because I’d scheduled posts in advance for my other blogs, in order to have a bit of extra time off. That means I’m now going through the whole ‘New Year, New You’ stuff the rest of you did LAST week: as with many things in my life, I may take a little longer than everyone else, but I get there eventually!

I have actually been doing some work on this blog over the past week, but that never really feels like “work” to me, so I haven’t bothered trying to get back into any kind of routine – or, indeed, starting a new one. I’m not particularly looking forward to it, either, to be honest. This time last week, I was raring to go: I’d had my fill of holiday parties (and I’d DEFINITELY had my fill of holiday food. I probably had YOUR fill of holiday food too, actually…), and I was all fired up and motivated to make 2015 my Best! Year! Ever!

This week, though? Meh. My motivation seems to have abandoned me, along with my energy levels, and now I just want to curl up in bed and wait for spring. Still, Monday is a new start, so I’m going to do my best to make the most of it. This year I have that book to write, after all, and I also want to try to get myself back into a decent exercise routine again. Last year I started off strong, and was using the treadmill almost every day, but by the time December rolled around, the combination of all of the work we’d been doing in the house, plus the busy run-up to the holidays, allowed me to convince myself I “didn’t have time” to fit it in. And I know, I know: these are just excuses, and I could definitely have made the time if I’d tried… the truth is I didn’t really want to, so I let it slip, and now I have to start all over again.

I will, though. This year I thought I’d use these Morning Coffee posts, not just as an opportunity for a quick catch-up on what’s been happing during the week, but also as a way to keep track of my progress with the various goals I have for the year/month/whatever. Those might change as the year goes on, but for now there are just two main things I’m concentrating on:

1. WRITE THAT FREAKING BOOK, ALREADY,

2. Run. For God’s sake woman, just RUN. Or do something, at least. Like shopping, maybe. Shopping totally counts as exercise, right?

The good news is that I DID find time to do some work on the book this week. OK, it’s just over 5,000 words, and quite  few of them were copied and pasted from my previous attempts at book-writing, but, you know, at least it’s a start. Now I just need to make sure there’s a “finish”, too, so, in an effort to keep myself accountable, I’m going to post the current wordcount, plus the number of times I worked out, at the bottom of these weekly posts. As you can see, I wasn’t quite so successful on the exercise front this week, but I DID order some new workout clothes, and that’s a start too, I guess. (It’s also shopping, and I love shopping, so…)

    How long/far would you usually run? Give me something to work towards Amber?
    This new year new you thing is being enforced upon me. I’m clearing out my mum’s house as she died before Christmas, no greater motivation to make something more of your life than that.

      Oh gosh, I’m so sorry to hear about your mum – that’s awful 🙁

      I normally run about 8 – 10K, but this year I might try doing shorter runs, but more often: we’ll see how that goes!

        Thanks, I’m usually very good with words (or so I hope, I am a lawyer after all) but they’ve deserted me on this point.
        I can’t run for toffee. Very envious of your running skills (and gorgeous figure!).

    I love the little count at the bottom of your post and am looking forward to keeping up to date with your progress, especially with the book! I think my new years resolutions are starting a bit later as well this year, there’s just too much Christmas chocolate still in the house to start healthy eating on January 1!

    I feel your pain, the start to the new year has definitely left me without any motivation either, which really sucks as you make all these goals and resolutions and then its like…blergh, I’m sure it’ll get better though, good luck with the book! x

    I have a little work to do to complete two projects that will mark the last bits of work for my BA, but can’t seem to do it. I promised it would be finished before Christmas, but I had another exhibition then and needed to write that up, as well as printing some images to add to the other project. I am trying to tip my grades into a first, but looks like I’m not going to succeed.
    Let me know of any tips that you find might help

    Hooray that your book is on its way! I’ve just had the news – from a man putting a board up on our house – that we’re going to be evicted. And I love this house and can’t afford another one in this area, so, Happy New Year to me! Sigh…

    Congrats on the book progress, Amber! Progress is progress! Can’t wait to see how far you come in the next few months! I hit 3/5 of my runs this week. I added strength training into the mix and I couldn’t barely bend my legs enough to sit on the toilet – let alone go for another run!!! Onwards and upwards!

    Oh, no, your fence! That wind can be horrible. Hope your Monday finds you getting a great start to your new year. I have been doing a lot more exercising these days, and the best way to start was with the shopping for new workout wear. Shopping should be a sport, such a mood booster. 🙂

    I would love to start running but I find it just so hard to motivate myself.
