OUTFIT | Blue gingham capri pants and (slightly) shorter hair

So, I cut my hair: mostly through sheer laziness.

See, every year, as soon as the weather starts to warm up a little, I get this urge to chop off my tresses. When it’s long, it takes SO long to blow dry and style, and while I can put up with it during the autumn and winter, when it’s warm out, like it has been lately, it all just starts to feel like like more trouble than it’s worth, so this year I decided just to go for the chop, safe in the knowledge that my hair grows so fast that it’ll be halfway down my back again in no time.

It felt like a HUGE change to me at the time – like, the kind of change you start regretting almost as soon as the stylist makes that first cut. Just a few minutes after these photos were taken, though, I met up with no less than five members of my immediate family, and not one of them even noticed I’d had it cut, so, this just in, Amber’s hair in ‘Not As Important As She Thinks It Is’ Shocker  – WHO KNEW?

Anyway, the other brand new thing in these photos are the gingham capri pants, which I got from Dorothy Perkins last week. I’ve actually been quite frustrated by the whole gingham trend this spring/summer: I mean, I LOVE gingham – as my wardrobe full of the stuff testifies – but lately it’s been hard to find gingham print clothing that doesn’t have some huge ruffle attached to it, and ruffles are just Not My Thing. They’re one of those things that look fantastic on other people, but make me look like an extra from Gone With the Wind, and, as cool as that would be, I generally prefer to just keep things as simple as possible, you know?

These are definitely “simple”, and they were also pretty cheap, at £22, so they’ll probably be one one and only gingham purchase this summer – or, then again, maybe not

Ah, so with you on the ruffle thing! I’m a size 16 and 43 and love to dress up (I have two looks: attending an event/cleaning the bathroom). Given all the foregoing, it is very easy for me to drift towards Mother of the Bride; NOT what I’m aiming for!

Moira, your two looks (“attending an event / cleaning the bathroom”) made me laugh out loud! I have the same two!

  • I love gingham! I can remember when I was 9, I fell in love with a piece of black and white gingham fabric, and made my mother make me a skirt out of it. I also had a matching hat, and yes I wore them both together as often as possible.
That aside, I love your styling of this outfit, and the new layers in your hair (are they new? have I been hair blind before this moment?) are just lovely on you x

I’m with you on the ruffle thing, I don’t believe I’ve ever worn a ruffle in my life. I feel the same about patterned fabric, although I have been brave enough to buy a very few in recent years and actually like them.
Love the blue gingham Capri pants and how you’ve styled them with pink. Very summery.

  • What is with the ruffles this year? They ruin everything, especially gingham. I don’t need to be a bloody cupcake. I’m 5ft nothing and wearing ruffles is an excuse to be patted on the head. Which I hate

  • I love how you styled the pants! I’m terrible with figuring out what colors go with what, and I love the blush with the black and white! And I have to agree on the ruffle thing, so many perfectly good shirts ruined, ha.

I know what you mean about the hair! I think anything past shoulder length just gets filed under “long” in people’s heads so they don’t notice the change unless you go for a bob or something. When my hair was long I’d get a good 5-6 inches cut off every spring and no one ever noticed.

  • Ooh those trousers are petite – now I’m listening! What’s the waist like on an actual non-model person? I can’t really do anything that’s low-waist… I thought your hair looked a bit shorter, but I have to add I’m one of these people that notices these things. No one notices when I cut my hair! I think it looks nice like this, anyway 🙂
