OUTFIT | Dotty Culotte-y

denim and polka dots

blue polka dot culottes with red shoes and denim jacket

Because I have my finger right on the fashion pulse – not – and therefore rarely manage to scramble aboard the trend bandwagon until it’s well and truly left the station, I finally bought a pair of culottes.

They cost me £5. Last of the big spenders, huh?

To be honest, though, £5 was all I was really willing to spend on this particular style experiment, because, even as I pressed the “Buy Now” button, I had a sneaking suspicion that I’d just ordered myself a pair of giant, wide-legged pants, and that I would not like it. Sure enough, when the package arrived, I pulled them out, looked at them, and was like, “Huh: a pair of giant, wide-legged pants. Why did I?”

They were here now, though, so I gamely tried them on, and, once again had that, “I am wearing a pair of giant pants and I don’t know why?” feeling. Then I remembered that I live in the land of permanent breezes, and that it’s never, ever not windy (Seriously, I don’t even know why I bother combing my hair before taking photos? Like, why do I do that?!), and suddenly the idea of trousers that look like a skirt seemed like a pretty good idea.

Now that I’ve actually worn them, I stand by that conclusion. It was super windy when we took these photos, just for a change, and although I lost the battle to keep my hair out of my face in most of them, at least I didn’t have to worry about inadvertently flashing my knickers at random passers-by – which is a real concern for me, most days. I also discovered that, as there’s quite a lot of fabric in them, unless I adopt a super-hero stance, with my legs more than shoulder-width apart (And honestly, how many times a day do YOU choose to stand like a super-hero? I’m thinking maybe 5, max – 7 on a good day…), they just look like a midi skirt, anyway – and heaven forbid there be a polka-dot midi-skirt in the world that I don’t own, huh?

So, culottes, welcome to my wardrobe. I may even buy some more pairs of you one day, when you’re long, long out of fashion…

I love culottes, especially paired with a pair of killer heels! If only I wasn’t too short to wear them. Or have the wrong figure entirely… Maybe one day!

Is that website any good, Amber? I’ve browsed on a number of occasions but never gone ahead and bought anything. I just can’t help thinking that it’s too good to be true and every item would be shapeless and poor quality but then, I guess you get what you pay for. Would you recommend it?

I haven’t had any issues with it so far, but I’ve only used it a few times!

Those are actually really cute and I like the length too. I am seeing more of the voluminous cropped trousers around, but I like these for summer. The polka-dots are an added bonus too!

These look amazing! I did definitely think they were a skirt first, so them not blowing up in your face is a definite plus 😀 I’ve always felt the same way about culottes – a bit indifferent and not quite sure if they’d work for me. But seeing them on you, I’m definitely willing to give them a go now! I’ve often looked around Everything 5 Pounds but always been a bit wary of buying from there, maybe I’ll take the plunge and try out the culottes from there plus a few other items – it’s only risking £5 after all!

Excellent bargain, especially if you wear them even once. Culottes have been in and out of fashion for the last 70 or so years, so hang on to them.

Being a tall person I love wide legged pants & wish I could find a pair of culottes this cute for that price here in the states.

Such a cute spring outfit! Spots and denim are always a great combination, but the touch of red really makes this outfit! Completing the outfit with delicate jewellery pieces is a great idea to ensure that nothing detracts from the cute statement pants. Thanks for sharing!
