Where to find the best retro skirts on the high street
Want to know where the best – the absolute best – retro skirts on the high street live?
Well, luckily I can tell you: because that’s the kind of thing you get to know when you dedicate your life to buying all the skirts in all the land. Which I have. Look, everyone needs a hobby, OK?
It’s H&M.
Yes, the same H&M you probably buy multipack knickers and surprisingly decent workout clothes from. (I’m talking about myself here, you understand…) The one you step into to buy a basic tank top, and then leave laden down with fifteen items you didn’t know you wanted, plus a random lint roller you picked up the checkout. THAT H&M. I know it gets a bad rap from time to time, and it’s true that the sizing can be a bit of a lucky dip, but the skirts? The skirts are amazing: and you can trust one who’s taken it upon herself to thoroughly investigate this. Ahem.
I’ve bought quite a few retro skirts from H&M over the years (Like this one, for instance. And this one. Also this one. And who could forget this one?), and the thing I like most about them is the sheer volume of fabric they use. I’m not wearing a petticoat with this yellow jacquard skirt (although the wind is blowing it around a bit in the first shot!), because it honestly doesn’t need one: the acres of fabric, combined with the thickness of the brocade material (Which doesn’t crease, either, just as an added bonus) make it gloriously full and swishy – which is just the way I like my skirts to be, as I’m sure you’ve gathered by now.
I liked it so much, in fact, that a few days after it arrived, I also ordered this one, which is just as full, and which will be coming to a blog post near you very soon. In the meantime, I’m secretly hoping they don’t release these retro skirts in any more colours – they might be relatively affordable, but when you just can’t stop buying them… well, it looks like I picked a bad time to re-start that shopping diet I kept banging on about last year, and then totally failed to stick to, didn’t I? If only I felt even remotely sorry about it…
In other news, I think I might have also tracked down where all of the best daffodils live, too – or, rather, Terry did, and then told me about it, at which point we had to get into the car and drive their immediately to take photos. (Part of living with a blogger – or even just knowing one – is that you start to take notice of these things. We have all of our friends on a constant daffodil/cherry blossom/ pretty field alert now – so if any of them see a good field, or a pink wall or whatever, they’re under strict instructions to text us immediately…) What a month I’m having, to be sure. I’d like to say this field was every bit as tranquil as it looks in the photos, but actually, it was blowing a small gale when these were taken, and I might have almost fallen on my ass a few times while trying to get in and out of it. Look out for an ‘Outfit Out-Takes’ post, coming soon…
Have you spotted any retro skirts on the high street lately?

I was looking at the H&M website for gingham skirts the other day and saw this one, plus another, and in my head I said “they are such Amber skirts”. Lol. I’d not seen your IG at that point either. Is it wrong to mentally shop for people you’ve never met before?! Sadly no gingham skirts though.

H&M is totally killing me this season. They just brought these ballerina flats (real ballerina flats, with the ribbons, pointe shape and all!) in black and silver, and I don´t think one pair each colour will be enough. Also, this skirt! It looks awesome on you, and now I might have to try if it looks the same on me. You know? Just field research…

Wow this is a beautiful skirt. I like the print and the location of that shooting.

What a great expression from Lou, “an Amber skirt”.

I love how you styled this skirt. The white top and off-white cardigan are perfect!

I’m so pleased with myself because as soon as I read the first sentence I was like ‘I bet it’s H&M’. And it was! They really are the best for that aren’t they, their skirts fall so beautifully. That is SUCH a gorgeous one. Perfect setting too 🙂

Great location scouting by Terry! That’s another beautiful Amber skirt.

How funny, I’ve just written a post about H&M skirts too! There are SO MANY I want right now, including both the ones you bought! No-one else at this price point seems to manage to make this style look so expensive! I have so many of them already so I can’t really justify any more, but they make it bloody hard!

OMG how beautifully gorgeous! I feel quite inspired by reading your blog posts. I have literally just discovered you and had a peek back through. I feel like I want to embrace my own personal style!

If only Malaysia has these beautiful fields with flowers everywhere! (I’m pretty sure we have _some_ somewhere, but it’s definitely not easy access: $$$) I love the outfit combo here. While I’m not a fan of midi skirts (they kinda fall somewhere awkwardly below my knees), you look absolutely nice in this. Love that the prints on your skirt matches the flowers on the field, a very nice touch.
