The Understudy
Mint cords: H&M // mint sweater : H&M // jacket: New Look (old) // shoes: Buffalo ‘Beyza’ c/o Sarenza
Gah.
I’ve started this post about five times now, and every single time I’ve just scrapped it and started over again, because I have simultaneously so much and so little to say that I can’t seem to organize my thoughts properly. So here is a list:
1. It’s getting really difficult to take outfit photos lately. The lack of natural light (It’s dark by about 4pm at the moment, and the days are still getting shorter…) makes it just as difficult to shoot indoors as it does outdoors, and it also makes me want to retreat into “comfort clothes” all the time. Trust me, you don’t want to see the photographic evidence of that…
2. When I say “comfort clothes”, I’m talking about jeans and sweaters, mostly. I don’t want you all picturing me in of of those adult onesies or anything, OK?
3. You’re all totally picturing me in an adult onesie now, aren’t you? GOD.
4. None of this would really matter (Well, apart from the adult onesie thing, obviously), if I had other stuff I could talk about instead, but the fact is, I don’t.
5. Well, actually, I DO. I mean, obviously there are plenty of things I could talk about other than clothes: it’s just that most of them wouldn’t be very interesting (or even less interesting, rather), so until that changes, you’re stuck with the sporadic outfit photos, I’m afraid.
6. These ones were taken in a hurry, just as it started to rain, and it wasn’t until I looked back at them I realised the car headlights were shining on the bottom of my legs and making my cords look like they’ve been dip-dyed. Which they haven’t. I’m not NEARLY trendy enough to attempt the “ombre” look…
7. Speaking of the cords: these are the twins of the the cream version I wore in this post. I was so happy to find trousers short enough for me to be able to get away without hemming or rolling them that I also bought this mint version a few weeks ago. Then they went on sale, and well, let’s just say those weren’t the only two colours I ended up with. Ahem.
8. Oh yeah, the post title. It refers to the shoes, which are basically a cheaper version of my Pigalle pumps, which are what I’d intended to wear with this outfit. But the weather was awful, and while I’m not one to keep things “for best”, I’m also not one to needlessly ruin my favourite shoes by wearing them in the rain, so I went for the understudy instead. Every shoe should have an understudy, which can go on when the star of the show can’t appear, don’t you think?
9. No, my feet weren’t cold. Because I was wearing those hideous little “pop sock” things that little old ladies wear, which are basically just sheer tights, cut off at the ankle. They seriously have to be one of the most unattractive items of clothing ever, but hey: they keep my feet warm enough to allow me to wear pumps, and once they’re on, no one needs to be any the wiser.
10. Unless I write a blog post and tell everyone on the internets about them, obviously.
Oops.
Ani
Amber, I absolutely love those pastel and soft colours for fall, it’s simply refreshing. Hope you have a great start in the week?

Amber
Thanks, Ani – I’ve been determined to wear lighter shades this year, rather than just retreating into the depressing blacks and greys I usually wear in winter!
Elise
Aw I remember wearing pop socks to school haha! Your trousers totally look dip dyed in that pic, it’s kinda cool 🙂
Amber
lol! I really hate having to wear them, but all of my boots looked wrong, and it was too cold for bare feet, so pop socks it was! Roll on spring, though, when I can just wear what I like without having to think of these things!

Those are great pants, and such a pretty collar on your jacket! I totally get what you mean about both the dwindling natural light and understudy-shoes filling the role in a pinch. I find it’s a fine balance “not saving for best” vs. the weather and the practical demands of the day – having an additional audience via blog is helping me enjoy my favourites more.
P.S. I think you’re the only adult on the planet who would look seriously awesome in a onesie. Can’t un-imagine it now!
Amber
Haha, now that the image is in everyone’s minds, it’ll be just like I actually wore one!

Aww I plead guilty on wearing knee-high pop socks too. I don’t like them either, but they are the best solution when you have to wear pumps in cold weather. And I don’t like wearing tights under my pants, unless it is REALLY cold outside.
I really liked your outfit, and yes at first I thought that your jeans were dip-dyed or ombre. It’s nice that you still wear light colors…I do too, and I’ll keep doing it as long as I can.
Amber
I’m glad it’s not just me who does this – it was the only way I could think of to keep wearing my favourite shoes when it’s colder! (And I hate tights under pants, too: just can’t do it!)
Wore Out
I totally thought your jeans were dip dyed until I read though your bullet points. I am constantly amazed at how chic monochromatic looks are, I’ll be working more of mono looks into my wardrobe asap.
Amber
I’m really glad I mentioned it now – will have to remember to step away from the headlights next time!
I’m a huge fan of monochrome looks: it’s so easy, but I always like the way it turns out!

Beautiful outfit, it really fits you! ♥
Heather
Great outfit. I think you look gorgeous.
And I don’t do onsies either. They just look like big babygrows to me!
Erika
I love the jacket, and I am glad to know that the pants weren’t dip dyed cause I totally thought they were at first, and I wasn’t too sure I liked the way they looked. But, whew, another beautiful outfit post! It really is refreshing to see cool, lighter colors for winter. I am in serious need of getting rid of some of my winter darks. I have just too many of them.
Suzanne
That’s funny because the first thing I thought of when I saw the post was, “oh, Amber is stepping out of her usual style here with the dip dyed jeans!” LOL. Glad to hear you haven’t succumbed to that quickly (but not quick enough) passing fad.
And thanks for giving me a reason to buy “understudy shoes”. That’s what I’m telling my husband the next time he asks me if I don’t have a pair just like that at home.

I should really have put the thing about the trousers not being dip-dyed right at the top of the post, shouldn’t I?
Nina
Lovely look! I adore the big curls in your hair – and the red lipstick is just the cherry on top!
Kerrie
I totally agree with you about pop socks!!! They’re horrible!! I just can’t wear them or tights if I’m wearing shoes at all. And also I may think about a pair of louboutin lookalikes since I got caught in the rain with my Pigalles!! They got soaked. They seem to have stood up to it though!!!
Amber
Mark/Kerrie,
I’m guessing from this comment that you didn’t get Terry’s email last week asking you to please stop trying to contact me and draw me into conversation relating to your wet feet /shoe/people fetish? Terry emailed you on the address you leave when you comment as “Mark”, and the address you use when you comment as “Kerrie”: presumably both of those emails are fake, leaving me no option but to leave this here in the hope that you will get the message. From the many comments you’ve made to me, both here (as Mark and “Kerrie”) and on Twitter and Instagram, it’s very clear to us that you are a man with a fetish about people (and particularly shoes and feet) being wet. I have no issue with that, but I am very uncomfortable with you continuing to pose as a woman to try to involve me in conversations which are obviously sexual to you, and I was particularly uncomfortable with your comment last week about wanting to push me into mud. Please stop contacting me: this blog is about fashion, and it’s not appropriate for you to be trying to use it involve me in your fetish, especially in such an underhand way, by pretending you’re simply a woman who loves shoes.
Mark
No offence intended. Sorry
Nicola
Hi Amber, I love this outfit, it really suits you. Where are the jeans from if you don’t mind ?
Amber
Hi Nicola,
They’re from H&M – there’s a link to them at the top of the page, underneath the photos!
