Three Things Friday | The Little Things

I never really know how to start these posts.

I mean, it seems a bit boring starting every post with the generic old, “This week was good/this week was bad,” statement, but then again, there’s not a whole lot else to say, really, so let the record show that this week was… busy, I guess. That’s the first word that springs to mind when I try to sum it up. Unfortunately for me (and for you, actually, given that you’re the one who has to read this stuff…), however, it hasn’t been busy in a particularly interesting kind of way: more of a, “My butt has been welded to my desk chair for days now,” kinda way. Which doesn’t really give me a whole lot of ‘Three Things’ material, ya know?

Nevertheless, I promised to write down three positive things every single day this year, and to share three of those things every week, so this week’s post focuses on some of the little things that have been making me happy this week. Things like…

sunlit office chair01. Natural daylight

We don’t normally get a lot of natural light here in the middle of winter, but this week we’ve had a few sunny days, which have filled the house with light, and really helped boost my mood. I hesitate to mention this, because I know it’s not something a lot of people can relate to (especially these days, when everyone’s so obsessed with hygge, and the word “cosy”), but I’ve always been really affected by the weather, and I find it hard to be cheerful on a gloomy day, no matter how many lightboxes I try. (Well, I’ve only tried one, to be honest, but it didn’t make much of a difference, as far as I could tell…) Give me a bit of sunlight, though, and I’m a different person, so that glimpse of blue sky was very welcome this week – especially given that the weekend mostly looked like this:

sun shining through fog

Believe it or not, this photo was taken at around 2pm, and yes, that’s the sun trying to shine through that fog. It’s not like that ALL the time, obviously – not even in January – but it was like that for most of the weekend, so when the sun came out on Monday morning, I felt like cracking open the champagne.

That unexpected sunshine really helped me power through my ‘To Do’ list on the days it was there, and it even gave me the motivation for this:

Fitbit Flex

02. The Fitbit is back!

Yes, folks, the Fitbit is back on, after a lengthy absence, and I even managed to break 10,000 steps a few times this week, for the first time in months. I’m not sure how long this burst of enthusiasm will last: as I said, work is keeping me desk-bound for most of the day, so there’s not a lot of time left for exercise, and my Fitbit is a couple of years old now, which means the battery keeps dying on me unexpectedly. (If you’re a Fitbit user, you don’t need me to tell you how devastating it is when you take a long walk, or complete a workout, only to discover that your Fitbit died several hours ago, and all of those steps have gone uncounted. Devastating.) Still, I really need to get back into some kind of exercise regime, so it was good to be able to check that one off the list, for this week at least!

03. A couple of little house updates

I’m going through one of those phases right now where I want to redecorate the entire house, but I don’t have any money to do it, so when my parents arrived at the door this week clutching a white LED tree, which they’d found on sale in a garden centre, I was pretty happy. Surprised, obviously, because it’s not every day people rock up to your house with a tree, of all things, but actually a little bit less surprised than you might think, because:

a) This is exactly the kind of thing my parents do, seriously.

b) Terry and I have been on the lookout for a white tree for ages now. Yes, I realise that sounds pretty random, but while I think these are technically sold as Christmas trees, we actually wanted one for our bedroom, where we’re basically just using it as a giant light. Trust me, it looks awesome. (You’ll just have to trust me, unfortunately, because although we had all that lovely daylight this week, it didn’t occur to me to take a photo of the tree in situ, so, yeah. Trust me on this.)

The second photo is also courtesy of my parents: they gave me this set of ‘Famous Five’ themed postcards at Christmas (Context: my childhood obsession with The Five…), and as the office wall is still looking kind of bare, we decided to put these up, to give it a bit of colour. (Yes, I know the one at the top right is out of place, and that someone is going to say I’ve just triggered their “OCD”, but we didn’t have another card in the same style, so we’re trying to pass it off as a deliberate design choice…) These are the illustrations and book jackets I grew up with, so although it’s not exactly the most obvious choice of office decoration, it’s a nice little bit of nostalgia for me, and at least now I just have to glance up from my desk, and I’m instantly plunged into a world of ginger beer and adventure – with a few smugglers thrown in for luck.

And, as a bonus fourth happy thing for this week, here’s a photo of Rubin looking cute:

Everybody say, “Awwww!”before you go

  • Omg, the Famous Five! I’d forgotten about them and you reminded me!! Ahhh those books were my childhood.

  • I’m affected by the weather too, I hate dark gloomy days! And I also bought a SAD light, haha.

I love that you have light and that it is reflected off the white decor, our weather has surprisingly been colder and wetter than yours. We have huge glass doors facing south, and if there is any sun at all our house is warm, but recently not.

I love the white tree too.

The lack of daylight is pretty similar here too — although I think we get more snow, which doesn’t go away. We have had a lot of fog too so I know exactly what you mean about “uncorking the champagne” when the sun comes out! Here, the days are starting to get longer, sunset is around 5 pmish, which helps a lot, but I am very very tired of winter. While at times the snow is very pretty, after a while it gets very dirty and grey — until the next time it snows. Its been a couple of weeks now and it is just looking very blah.

I have a white tree lamp in my bedroom – it’s the perfect amount of light – so pretty and relaxing!

I love the idea of using images from book covers as wall art. My mom, sister, and I were all obsessed with Nancy Drew when I was a kid and I’ve thought of framing images from the classic covers to put on my walls. Maybe I’ll actually go ahead with it now.

  • Oh yes some sunshine just makes all the difference doesn’t it. Even just sat at my desk at the office, if the sun is shining I’m much more enthusiastic about getting out for my lunchtime canal run!

This is the second time today I’ve read “in situ” (the other was in relation to Canadian tar sand oil harvesting – weird). I have SAD, so I feel your lack of sunlight pain. It’s just as gloomy as ever in Michigan, USA 🙁

Awww! Rubin looks so happy and snuggled up 🙂 I hear you on the lack of sunshine. On a sunny day you can get so much more done, something about sunshine is just energising!

  • Your house updates are adorable. That clock is something else. I also really want the fitbit, not only does it look amazing but it’s really handy for fitness and health!

  • I still have all my Famous Five books, they’re great comfort reads! Now I know that there are postcards…..

  • I hear you on the sunlight! We were back at the coast for more wedding prep this weekend and for the first time in months we had two beautiful sunny days over there. Up until now it’s been thick fog, wind and rain and I’ve been asking myself what on earth I’ve done booking a wedding at the British seaside, but that little bit of sunshine has made me feel so much brighter (pun intended)!

  • I have the Famous Five postcards too, got them at Christmas 2015 and I have been planning to use them as wall décor since then. I haven’t yet got round to it but I really should. Yours look great!

I love the tree light! I could never find one that did not have the wires twisted all over the branches. Now that I know what I want exists, I’ll keep looking for it. Thanks!
