A Visit to Hever Castle, Kent
In the years we’ve been together, Terry and I have visited our family in Kent (Terry’s brother, Niko, and family) half a dozen times or more, and every single time we’ve been, we’ve told ourselves we’d definitely fit in a visit to Hever Castle & Gardens- the childhood home of Anne Boleyn – at some point. And then, every single time, we’ve totally not done that, because… I have no idea why, actually.
This year, then, I honestly didn’t have high hopes of making it to Hever Castle – so, naturally, this was the year we finally went.
(Side note: we drove to Hever from just outside Ashford, and decided to take the scenic route, rather than the motorway: this is something I really recommend if you have the time, because the countryside in this part of the world is just glorious, with so many picture=postcard little villages that my camera roll was full before we even reached the castle itself. But back to Hever Castle,,, )
Now, Hever Castle is probably best known for its Anne Boleyn connection, and, I have to confess that most of what I knew about it came from my – admittedly quite obsessive – binge-watching of The Tudors a few years ago. What I wasn’t prepared for, then, was how absolutely beautiful the place was going to be: both the castle itself, which was built in the 13th century, and has a proper moat and everything, to the gardens, which are some of the prettiest I’ve seen – and I’ve seen a lot of castle gardens in my time, trust me.
After a quick lunch at the on-site cafe, and a wander around the rose garden, we headed straight to the castle itself:

Beautiful castle and grounds! I travel vicariously through your posts! I’m glad you’re back. I’ve missed you
Amber
Thank you!
Erin
Those wildflowers are so gorgeous! Looks beautiful <3
Amber
It actually made me wish we still had a lawn, just so I grow wildflowers in it – it was so pretty!

I think what made me gasp the loudest was when you referred to Max as an 18 month old. When did that happen???? Crazy. The grounds are absolutely beautiful! I’m not sure how I will ever be able to fit everything I would like to see in England and Scotland in one trip! And then there’s Ireland… I love your travel posts though, they definitely pique my desire to do more exploring.

And he’s 20 months tomorrow! I swear someone has put my life on fast-forward or something!

It’s always so easy to forget just how many beautiful places there are to visit in our country but seeing all your travel posts makes me think I really need to start visiting some more of them.
Amber
Oh, totally: I haven’t seen even half of the things I want to see in the UK – there’s just so many of them!

Gorgeous Amber….on my to do list for next year when I visit my sister in Kent. It looks magic!
Amber
It really was – I’d love to go back sometime!

Amber, this is one of your most beautiful posts yet – the photos are just spectacular (sunny weather? Not in Scotland, eh…) and you look just gorgeous. I love the wildflowers most of all! This was my little trip to the UK during lunch hour at my desk – very grateful! And this comment is just to say 1) well done and 2) we’re paying attention out here, us fans. I think I probably sounded too needy about wanting replies to my comments – not needed this time, so go chase that toddler!
Amber
Ha, don’t worry about sounding needy – people who come back for replies are exactly the kind of people I want to have as readers!

Chiming in to say WOW that is gorgeous and it’s great to see another post from you!
I’m in Texas and it is an uphill battle to get a decent-looking garden, let alone something like Heyer Castle’s garden, but I still love these posts. They’re my inspiration for what to do with my hard, rocky bit of earth. Thank you for sharing!

Such gorgeous grounds! I do hope you’ll make it a priority to visit again when it’s not crowded. I had to redo a lot of castle visits simply due to crowds.
When I lived there, I was always surprised by all the talk of everyone wanting to go abroad when there’s so much beauty to be found within a few hours drive in each direction. The U.K. has so many amazing places.

Anne Boleyn’s story is so sad. I do hope she had a nice childhood at least! What a beautiful castle, the gardens are superb
Erika
Stunning! I so wished I lived somewhere close to such old history and such beautiful grounds. <3
