3 Must Have Products for Redheads

Why is it so hard to find redhead products that actually work for natural red hair?

Go into the hair aisle of any supermarket or drugstore, and you’ll find no end of products for blondes and brunettes… and maybe one or two redhead products, if you’re REALLY lucky. Even if you are, those one or two products will often be designed for people with dyed red hair, and will STILL be a colour that’s not much use to those of who were, as Lady Gaga says, born this way. It’s a hard-knock life, for sure.

Of course, we can’t really complain (Well, we CAN, and I for one DO. It’s kinda frowned upon, though…): there aren’t as many redheads out there as there are blondes and brunettes, so presumably there isn’t the same demand for products for red hair. I know from the people who find this blog after Googling “where can I find products for redheads” or “Why does the world hate gingers” or something, that I’m not the only one looking for products for redheads, so here are three I’ve been using lately…

Superdrug Colour Effects Conditioner in Warm Copper Gold

I’m starting off with a product I’ve been using for years now, and which my regular readers are probably sick of hearing about (sorry): Superdrug Colour Effects Conditioner. This is a colour-depositing conditioner, so it’ll add a touch of colour, although not as much as you’d get from a dye – the idea is to basically enhance your existing colour than to change it, so it’s fairly subtle, and will wash out after a few days. With that said, the longer you leave it on, the more noticeable it’ll be, so you CAN get more colour from it if you really want to: just don’t leave it too long or you might just get a nasty surprise. Not that I would know, obviously. Ahem.

This isn’t just designed for redheads, but there are two colours in the range that are suitable for red hair. I normally use Warm Copper Gold, which is pretty close to my natural colour, but I’ve also used Rich Red, which is a darker red, and a little more noticeable. Although they’re billed as “conditioners”, these are actually more like shampoos to use (the liquid froths up in the same way a shampoo does when you start to apply it), and don’t make any difference whatsoever to the condition of my hair, so I always use a separate conditioner afterwards. On the plus side, though, they’re £1.49 each, so they’re not exactly a huge investment. I get around 3-4 applications from each tube, and normally buy a few at a time: oh, and Superdrug often do 2-for-1 offers, which makes them eve cheaper…

Henna Colour Cream in Copper Golden Blonde

This one is, as the name suggests, henna, but as it’s in cream form rather than the usual powder, it’s much easier to apply, and I find that it doesn’t last nearly as long as ‘regular’ henna –– which I guess could be a good thing or a bad one, depending on your point of view! I normally use this in Copper Golden Blonde (BUY IT HERE); be warned, though, this is a really vibrant colour which runs the risk of turning a very bright orange if you leave it too long, or try to use it on light coloured hair, so use with caution!

Wella Professional Color Fresh Mask

This is another product I’ve mentioned before, and have used on and off for many years now. It’s Wella Professional Color Fresh Mask [BUY IT HERE] and the shade ‘Copper Glow‘ will give you a bright ‘ginger’ boost to your natural colour. As with the henna product above, you’ll have to be careful how long you leave this on for, and be aware that the colour will be much more obvious on lighter coloured hair. I’ve always been quite blonde at both temples, and I find that if I leave ANY of these products on that particular area, I’ll end up with a couple of fetching neon orange streaks… With that said, as long as you follow the instructions (and maybe even do a strand test if you’re worried), this should work really well on natural red hair: and if you’re not happy with the results, at least you know it’ll wash out without too much trouble!
