Spring Outfits for a Classic / Minimal Wardrobe

Disclosure:  some of my spring outfits contain affiliate links

Spring outfits are my absolute favourites.

Living in Scotland means you don’t get a lot of different weather conditions to dress for. Most of the year, it’s just cold and wet which means that, no matter what you wear, you end up having to hide it under a huge coat and woolly hat anyway. Summer, meanwhile, is generally a bit of a wash-out: either pouring rain and freezing cold, or – very occasionally – so hot that only shorts and tshirts will do.

Which leaves us with spring.

Spring is basically the only time of year I feel like I get to make full use of my wardrobe, breaking out the dresses and skirts, sure, but also some of the jackets and knits that I also love. And, OK, this time of year often only lasts for a couple of weeks around here, but hey – we might as well enjoy it while it lasts, right? Here are some of my favorite spring outfit ideas, to help you do just that, and I’ve listed some of the key pieces from this selection below…

THE RIBBED DRESS

Super-versatile, and able to be easily dressed up or down, I’ve included this ribbed dress in two colours – black and beige. Outfit one shows the beige version styled for work, or any other smart/casual event, while you’ll see the black dress styled much more casually, with sneakers and a denim jacket.

THE SATIN SKIRT

A satin skirt has become an unexpected wardrobe staple for me. I own a couple of these in different colours, and while I’ve shown this one styled fairly formally, I also wear them with trainers and a tshirt or sweater for a much more relaxed look.

THE WHITE SKIRT

You can create countless spring outfits with just one white skirt: this one happens to be ribbed, which will make it warm enough for our chilly Scottish springs, but if you’re lucky enough to live in a warmer climate, you could just as easily substitute it for cotton, or another, more lightweight fabric.

THE SLOGAN SWEATSHIRT

I more or less live in slogan sweatshirts: not just in spring, but all year round. This one comes in either cream or black, both of which should be really versatile, and allow you to wear it with skirts, jeans, and leggings.

THE CAPRI PANTS

Although I tend to think of capri pants as a very ‘retro’ kind of style, I’ve noticed quite a few retailers stocking them this spring (these ones are from H&M, but I’ve also seen them at ZARA and ASOS), which makes me happy, because they’re the perfect midway point between shorts and trousers, and therefore the perfect basis for many of your spring outfits.

THE DENIM JACKET

I genuinely don’t know how I’d dress myself some days without a denim jacket: no joke.

THE SNEAKERS

I’ve included two pairs of sneakers in this collection of spring outfits, but I own many, many more than that, and you better believe I get the full use out of all of them…

THE ECRU JEANS

Finally, an item that can be just a little bit risky for me, on account of my propensity to spill things on myself, but which I still wouldn’t want to be without. Ecru jeans always look that little bit classier than blue jeans to me, and they look particularly good with tan or beige for a very luxe casual look.

  • My daughter would love that bag – but not at that price!

  • It’s a great, simple outfit though isn’t it and I really like your hair like this, it’s so glossy! I take my pictures in the afternoon/early evening after work so yes, sometimes look inappropriately dressed for the weather in a skirt and sandals but holding a brolly or in trousers and sleeves wearing sunglasses sweating it out because when I got dressed that morning it was chilly! Good old UK weather, never fails to make fools of us all.

You look fab, love the hat! I have that power too, all I have to do is step outside with the clean washing to hang on the line and it will rain. Sometimes I only have to THINK about hanging out the washing to make it rain. It’s a rare talent I feel. x

  • Clouds or no, you look fantastic even so. It has been raining like nuts here too- and I live in a desert!

  • Oh, blogger problems! I hear ya though! There is nothing worse than rain happening on photoshootdays. Doom!

The photos look lovely though! I have a total girl crush on your hair! I have hair of a similar length but it always looks shabby and meh!

  • I have this top and wear it a whole lot, so it’s nice to get some outfit inspiration – although I’m pretty sure that me plus pale coloured trousers would be a recipe for disaster…

I would also just like to say, since I’m sure you get search notifications, that I just searched your blog for ‘nude heels’ and then realised that made me sound like a very creepy person. In my defence, I am eyeing up some new shoes and was wondering whether to get them in my trusty black or not-so-trusty nude (but that means I get bonus points for ‘I’ve not already got ten of these’, right?) and was looking for some outfit inspiration. Not sure if there’s a less rude way to search for that!

      • Ha, I am sure you do! Fortunately I’ve been reading for a couple of years – it’s how I know you are the first place to look for styling nude pumps 😉

  • LOL about the rain history. Love the outfit, you should wear more it.
