On Tuesday, Terry and I decided to head into Edinburgh to run a few errands, and as the forecast was still looking suspiciously good, we thought we’d also pay a quick visit to the Edinburgh Royal Botanic Gardens, which is one of those places you visit on a school outing, whine about how “boring” it is, and then don’t go back to until it’s 20 years later and you’re wondering why on earth you’ve been ignoring this little patch of paradise in the middle of the city. Because it really, really is a little patch of paradise. Seriously, go now. Don’t even wait to finish reading this post: it’s just starts being about white jeans after this paragraph anyway…

I say the forecast was looking good. When we left the house it was overcast and looked like it was only going to get worse, so instead of the floral sundress that would be the obvious choice for me on such an outing (I mean, even if it was SNOWING, I’d probably want to wear a floral sundress to a botanic garden, you know?), I decided to flex my new “I can totally wear casual clothes!” muscle, and wear a pair of jeans, like a normal person. Well, you guessed it: by the time we got to the city, the sun was beating down, the sky was blue… and there was I, hot and sticky in a pair of jeans. Trust me to wear inappropriate sundresses for almost every occasion, and then change into jeans on the ONE day when a sundress would actually have been the best possible choice: GAH.

(Now I come to think if it, though, almost everyone else in the gardens was wearing jeans too, so at least I wasn’t TOO out of place. Well, other than the fact that I was the only one dressed in blinding, head-to-toe white, obviously.)

(No, I didn’t spill anything on myself. Yes, I was surprised, too.)

These jeans actually represent the culmination of many years of searching for a pair of white jeans that don’t look like leggings. Because almost all white jeans look like leggings, don’t they? Rather than buying and then returning pretty much every pair of white jeans on the market, though, I should probably just have headed straight for 7 for All Mankind, which is my favourite denim brand. Mostly because their jeans are one of the few brands that DON’T always look like leggings. (And they always fit, too. With most jeans, it’s really anyone’s guess what size I’ll be, but with 7faM I always buy the same size, and they always fit. True story.)

These ones aren’t perfect – I found out from these photos that low-rise waists aren’t my friends (I mean, I already KNEW that, but it’s always good to have it confirmed, no?), for instance, but then again, high-rise white jeans don’t sound particularly friendly either, so I’m just going to count my blessings, and thank the denim gods for providing jeans that don’t threaten to cut off the circulation in my calves. Either that or I’ll just have to accept that I’m not cut out to be a Jeans Person…

I’m wearing:

It’s always the way isn’t it? If you had worn a floral dress the clouds would have rolled in and the heavens would have opened. So on the bright side, your uncomfortable choice of jeans ensured that everyone enjoyed a sunny day (and they looked awesome too!)

Haha, so true: I sometimes think I should start calling myself Amber ‘The Rainmaker’ McNaught – if I wear something summery I can guarantee it’ll pour down!

Thanks, Myra: it’s such a great place to take photos – I can’t believe it’s taken us so long to go back there!

This looks so beautiful! I’ve been really enjoying the “Things I Did” posts recently. My best friend is moving in 2 months from the United States to Edinburgh for vet school so these posts give me some inspiration for outings when I eventually visit her! We’ve been adding some of your lovely photos to our master “Scotland Bucket List” pinboard. (I go to medical school in Boston, MA… sadly so far away from Scotland! …And with just scarce educational loans to finance a flight to visit her!)

Oh, that’s awesome – I’m glad they’ve been useful: I’m trying to get back to a bit more of the “diary” style posts I used to do here, so it’s always useful to know if people like them! Good luck to your friend, and I hope you do make it over for a visit 🙂

The scenary is most spectacular there!

In december for holiday I was in Durban on the east coast and december being our season of summer here in South Africa and the province Kwazulu-Natal being sub tropical it rained and rained most of the time, but we visited the Memorial site where Nelson Mandela was captured in 1963 in Howick.
Doing that all in this sub tropical weather my MotherCity of Cape Town the cast was clear skies, 32degrees centigrade celsuis mercury, moderate wind, seawater temp. 25degrees centigrade celsius alcohol for weeks lol!

So, Amber I consider your outing very promising dear…

I want to go to some botanical gardens. Those look beautiful.
I am not a white jeans person. Every pair I have ever had has suffered some horrible fate. Gum, Coffee, accidental washing with new pair of blue jeans. But if I were I would want those. Low rise usually don’t work for me either (Oh the perils of being a hippy us size 12) but hi rise jeans are worse.
I am completely jealous that you made it through a day wearing all white. What is your secret? Clear non staining liquids and dry non drippy foods?

If I wore something like that I would instantly spill an entire coffee down my front. Not instantly actually, not until I was at least 30 minutes away from home and with nothing available to cover the stain. It looks great on you.
This post makes me homesick for Edinburgh, I lived there for 5 years and loved every minute. The botanical gardens really are a lovely place to spend time in the summer.

Wow, how did you not spill? Did you just not eat anything or go near any soil or plants all day? I’m impressed! 🙂
I’d have worn the most impractical thing, too – I’m like that anyway plus I never look at the weather forecast.

Love your ‘diary style’ posts in case I’ve never mentioned it before. And your outfit style posts, oh, I just love all of your posts! I’m gonna have to try this brand of jeans. I’m curious how well they’ll fit me.

AD | Time for a quick game of “Where’s Amber?”⁣
It’s another rainy Monday, so I’m throwing it back to our trip to @universalorlando ‘s amazing Volcano Bay water park last month. I’m a bit of a scaredy when it comes to water flumes, but this park had tons of stuff for pretty much everyone: plenty of rides for me, and an amazing splash pad for Max 👶In fact, I’d still be on The Fearless River right now if I possibly could be. Still, doing the laundry and turning the heating on will be just as good, right? Right?! 🌋 🏊‍♀️ .

Good news! We took Max to hospital this morning, and saw two different surgeons, who agreed there was no need to go ahead with the surgery as his lip is healing really well on its own 😅 He’ll definitely have a scar, unfortunately, but that would’ve been the case whether he’d had the surgery or not, and if it turns out to be worse than anticipated, we’ll have the option to have it corrected under local anaesthetic when he’s older. ⁣
I’m still really upset that this happened in the first place, obviously, but so relieved that we don’t have to put him through a general anaesthetic, and just incredibly grateful that it wasn’t anything worse. I know some parents have to deal with much more serious stuff than this, and my heart goes out to you all: it’s been a rough couple of days, and I’m really grateful to everyone who took the time to comment on yesterday’s post - your stories were so comforting when I was panicking yesterday ❤️ ⁣
(Old photo, obviously: every time Max sees the selfie camera, he thinks it’s going to be one of those filters where you open your mouth and something happens 😂)⁣

Good news! We took Max...

Totally unrelated photo, but we’ve just spent the morning in Accident & Emergency with Max, who fell on the path outside the house and split his lip open 😥 ⁣
They tried to stitch it up at A&E, but it was totally impossible with him awake, so they’ve booked him in to have it done under general anaesthetic tomorrow ... Max is absolutely fine: the bleeding stopped quickly, he doesn’t seem to be in pain, and is just his normal, happy little self. I, on the other hand, am a complete wreck: the plastic surgeon he saw today reckons if we don’t have it fixed, his lip will be crooked when it heals, but I’m absolutely *terrified* of the thought of my baby having to have a GA. ⁣
If you’re a long-time follower, you might know that I have a full-blown phobia of general anaesthetic (I literally had an elective c-section in order to eliminate the possibility of an emergency one, which might have had to be done under GA), so I just can’t get my head to accept that it’s safe and he’ll be fine 😥 ⁣
Positive stories and advice very welcome: I’m just so terrified, I can’t even imagine how to get through the next 24 hours 😥😥😥

Totally unrelated photo, but we’ve...

#throwbackthursday to last week, when I needed a sunhat and SPF 50 to leave the house, rather than the current raincoat and wellies situation. Can you tell the post-holiday blues are still in full swing over here? 🌧 .

I posted this on Stories over the weekend, but he looked so cute in it I figured it deserved a spot on the grid, too! This is Max all ready for his friend Eleah’s 1st birthday party on Saturday: despite the jetlag and his continuing obsession with doors of all kinds (He had an entire soft play at his disposal, but he mostly just wanted to open and close the gate into it...) he had an absolute ball, and spent the whole drive home shouting, “HAPPY! HAPPY!” Thanks to @thestirlingstyle for a great party 🥳 🎈 🎉 . (Oh, and that’s his hairbrush in his hand - boy likes to look his best 😉)

We’re back home in not-so-sunny Scotland, but my feed is still stuck in Florida... New post is up on the blog (direct link in Stories..), talking about how we’ve been dealing with toddler jetlag, and why I always hate coming home after a trip...
