I Dream in Green

Has anyone ever seen the movie version of Great Expectations, starring Gwyneth Paltrow as Estella? It’s a good movie, actually: you should watch it. But that’s not what I’m here to talk about it.

One of the things I liked most about that movie, you see, was Estella’s wardrobe in it. It’s a modern re-telling of the story, and in every single scene, Gwyneth Platrow wears green: and not just any old green, either, but a gorgeous forest green shade, which is a colour my own wardrobe is full of. Gwyneth wears lots of different outfits in the course of movie, but every single one of them is in that same shade of green. Now, some might call that boring – in fact, I suspect a LOT of people would call that boring – but I loved it. I mean, girl knew what she liked, obviously, and what she liked was green. And so do I. “I know!” I thought, when the movie was over, “I think I’LL start wearing green all the time, too. It’ll be my “thing”! I’ve always wanted a “thing”, and green will be it!”

I didn’t actually do it, though. I mean, I know some of you probably THINK I did, because I wear so much green it sometimes feels like I don’t actually own any other colours, but I do, and I love them too. When it comes to colours, though – and especially when it comes to dresses – green will always be my favourite colour, so when LAMY sent me one of their new fountain pens, and asked me, not just to try it out, but to also post some other green things that make me happy, I didn’t have to think too hard about what I’d be showing you. First of all, though, here’s the pen:

Forever Amber

This is a lime green fountain pen (It’s the Special Edition LAMY safari neonlime, to give it its full name…), and , which writes in an equally lime green ink (I suspect it’s probably going to come out looking kinda yellow on some monitors, but you can trust me when I tell you that’s down to my photography, not the pen itself), and it got me all nostalgic for my childhood, in which I had a “special” fountain pen, with a bottle of ink, which I used exclusively for writing in my diary, so I could feel like I was in a Jane Austen novel or something. There’s just something about fountain pens that makes writing feel like more of a Big Deal than it does with a random old biro, you know?

Anyway, as I said, for this post I was asked to share some green things that make me happy, and, well, brace yourselves, folks…

Hi, I’m Amber, and I love green dresses: although, in fairness, one of these is actually a skirt and top. I like those, too. Also green shoes. I’ll stop now.

Now that I’ve showed you the green things that make ME happy, it’s over to you: LAMY are asking everyone to share their favourite green things on Instagram and Facebook, using the hashtag #limeupyourlife – and if your green things happen to be dress-shaped, well, I wouldn’t mind seeing them too…

  • Green is 110% your colour! I do not agree with the “green is a redheads best colour” because that is such a generalised saying and not actuallt true to alot, but it is so true for you!

It is your colour! Love your style.

  • I haven’t used a fountain pen since school when we mostly used to use them to flick ink at the person sat in front of us. I’m not sure that would go down too well at work but there was always something very grown up about fountain pens. Maybe I need to rethink my rather chewed biro.

As for Great Expectations (and looking back at school), that was one of our GCSE texts and I’m sure that any film would be let down by an absence of voices for the characters put on by our wonderfully wacky English Literature teacher, although he never wore a green dress. Or any dress… He did used to put a box up to his face with a smiley face on and wave at us. I wonder what happened to him…

  • I have one green dress – one! And it’s too tight so I can’t really wear it… I really really want more. I want all of your dresses basically. But especially the Trashy Diva ones – swoon!

Love this post, and all of the images. I love writing in green ink, but thought I’d pass this little gem on. Eyesenck (a famous psychologist) one said that people who write to him in green ink are invariably mad. That quite suits me, I think lol

  • I’ve always loved green with red hair. They play off each other so well. I think those emerald shades look especially beautiful on you.

Green is such an underrated colour – there are so many gorgeous shades, from bright and fun to soothing to sophisticated.

As a fellow ginger, I totally get your love of green. I have a ton of it in my wardrobe too.

  • I adore all your dresses, you look marvelous in green.
My only green thing that I really love that’s fashion related is the sash on my wedding dress. It was an above the knee length white eyelet dress and it had a green sash on it.

I don’t wear green so much anymore because my blue hair is more blue green and it usually ends up looking a bit matchy matchy.

  • I looooove green! Whenever I go somewhere fancy I always gravitate towards a green dress because I feel it shows my red hair off more. It’s our signature colour!

  • Just seen this post too! I’m a huge fan of green frocks so I’ll get posting on my Instagram as well. I dyed my hair green as a young punk many moons ago – looks better when I’m wearing it, I think 🙂

It’s such a great colour on you and looks fab with your lovely hair.
