Rimmel Colour Rush in The Redder The Better

Rimmel Lasting Colour Colour Rush Lip Balm

My first thought on reviewing this product: why the long name?

Seriously, this little guy’s full title is ‘Rimmel Lasting Finish Colour Rush Long Lasting Intense Colour Balm’, which is a bit of a mouthful, no? See, if I was the person whose job it is to come up with names for beauty products (And I should SO be that person, by the way…), my inclination would be to go for something short n’ snappy. “Jim”, maybe. Or, if that wasn’t possible, you could go the OTHER way. Why stop at a 10-word name when you could have something like ‘His Royal Highness the Honorable Rimmel Lasting Finish Colour Rush Long Lasting Intense Colour Balm the Third, Esquire’, say? Which is how I’m going to think of this product from now on, actually. You should, too.

(Yes, the lip balm is male. Don’t ask me how I know, I just do.)

But I digress. I’m supposed to be reviewing this, not making up new names for it, so before I get too carried away, allow me to tell you a bit about His Royal Highness – or ‘Jim’ for short.

So, this was basically an impulse buy that got added to my ASOS basket a few weeks ago. Because if you’re ordering something anyway, you may as well order something else while you’re at it, and save on the shipping fee, am I right? That was my logic, anyway, and I will further confess here that the main reason I ordered this was because of the name. I mean, “The Redder, The Better” is basically my life motto, so into the basket it went, even although I don’t normally like products described as lip balms, and was fairly sure I wouldn’t like this one either.

About that: I DO like lip balms, of course – I just like them as a treatment rather than as a cosmetic. I use balms to soften up my lips when they get dry, but I don’t normally use them to add colour to my pale lips, because I’ve found them to be pretty useless at that. Most people seem to like tinted lip balms because they’re “natural” , but “natural” is normally the last thing I’m after from a lip colour. I want my lips RED – the redder, the better, I dare say – and lip balms are often too gloopy and shiny to create the look I want. Lately, though,  as I mentioned in my post about lip stains, I’ve also been looking for lip colours which are really easy to apply, and this one is basically a giant crayon, so you can see how THAT would appeal, can’t you?

Anyway, I ordered it, and I didn’t get my hopes up, but as it turns out, I’ve been wearing it quite often since it arrived. I’m wearing it as I write this, actually.

Things I Like About This Here Product:

01. It’s like a giant crayon.

Never underestimate the power of a product shaped like a giant crayon, people. I was worried it would be too large to outline my lips properly, but actually, it’s really easy to use, and much simpler than a regular lipstick and pencil combo.

02. It provides tons of colour

Unlike some balms, which give you just a “hint” of colour, this looks more like a lipstick than a balm, and is a fairly intense colour.

03. It lasts much longer than I’d have thought

When you say “lip balm”, I think, “That’ll be on my lips until my first sip of coffee, then it’ll be long gone.” Well, it’s not a GREAT match for hot coffee, but I wore it last week to go out for a couple of drinks, and was all kinds of amazed when I got home and found the lip colour was still intact, without much fading. Did NOT expect that AT ALL.

04. It’s not drying

While I’d say it’s probably less moisturising than a “regular” balm, it’s much less drying than a traditional lipstick, and really comfortable to wear. It also doesn’t seem to bleed out around the mouth, or gather into the cracks on your lips (Because, yes, I have cracks on my lips sometimes…), so that’s good.

I WAS going to add a list of Things I Don’t Like at this point, but honestly, I can’t really think of any. Well, other than the fact that writing this review of it made me feel like I should probably take some awkward selfies of me actually wearing the stuff, and that’s how I ended up with a memory card full of photos like this:

Oh well: at least if I ever get arrested, I’ll be able to provide my own startled mugshot. It’s good to be prepared for these things, don’t you think?

This is £4 at ASOS, and you can find it here.

I love the lip crayon style, it’s so easy to apply- Amber, have you seen the Bourjois lip crayons? They’re my favourite, really good quality and colours. I love the new Rouge Velvet edition as well, its a matte lacquer that stays on really well and they have some seriously BRIGHT colours available

I’ve had a similar experience with the Revlon Colourstay lipbalm crayon things. Completely surprised at how good the colour is, despite feeling like I’m wearing nothing at all on my lips.

What eyeliner are you wearing in the picture? It looks really good!! I can’t wear black eyeliners because black doesn’t suit me, but finding a nice shade of brown can also be tricky.
